The WWE star Cody Rhodes faced a pivotal moment in his career when he challenged the reigning Undisputed WWE Universal Champion, Roman Reigns, at WrestleMania 39. While he aimed to seize the title from Reings, the outcome of their encounter took an unexpected turn as Rhodes suffered defeat.
With another showdown on the horizon at WrestleMania 40, the American Nightmare has revealed in his recent interview that he was unaware of his loss to Reigns until it folded out in the ring. However, fans do not seem so sure about his revelation, as they questioned the authenticity of Rhodes’ statement.
Cody Rhodes Claims He Was Unaware of WrestleMania 39 Loss
During his recent appearance on The MMA Hour, Cody Rhodes reflected on his experience at WrestleMania 39. When asked about when he found out that he was not going to win the match against Roman Reigns, he said,
“It’s a great question, and I’m of the thought that, there’s a movie, ‘The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.’—There’s a quote in there that I keep getting wrong, but it goes something like, ‘When the fact becomes a legend, print the legend.'”
Rhodes further suggested that the reality of the situation or the “fact” was that he found out he was not winning in the ring when he was pinned down. When asked if there were any prior discussions about the same, he shared that he was not sure about that, before adding that he could not discuss it any further.
“So for the purpose of this answer and that question, what I’ll tell you is I found out in the ring, in the moment that he hit me with the spear and pinned me, one, two, three.”
He also shared that after losing to Reings the walk back to his bus felt “long” due to the emotional weight of his loss and getting words of encouragement from the people around him. However, fans do not seem to believe his claims.
Fans React to Cody Rhodes’ Revelation about WrestleMania 39 Loss
Cody Rhodes’ revelation sparked conversation and speculation about the intricacies of wrestling storytelling. And they have taken to X (Twitter) to share their reaction to the claims made by the American Nightmare about his loss at WrestleMania 39.
Many fans shared skepticism about Rhodes being unaware of losing to the Universal Champion, arguing that “everything is scripted.” While some expressed skepticism that it’s possible he did not know about the ending beforehand, others remarked, “No one lies like Cody Rhodes.”

Many fans also asserted that the WWE star is fabricating the story to generate sympathy and support through “kayfabe” ahead of WrestleMania 40. “What the hell …Cody is just working everybody,” another fan stated. Whether Rhodes’ revelation is genuine or part of a larger narrative strategy remains to be seen. However, the WWE star still has ignited intriguing discussion among fans.
Rhodes will team up with Seth Rollins in a tag match against Roman Reigns and The Rock on Night 1 and is set to face Reigns in the main event for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship title on Night 2.
WrestleMania 40 will stream live on Peacock on April 6 and April 7, 2024.
