Concord is a brand-new 5v5 hero-based shooter that has received a mixed reception throughout its development cycle. The game is a culmination of Sony’s desperate attempt to leave its mask on the popular hero shooter genre after the acquisition of developer Firewalk Studios in 2023.
Even the shooter’s beta weekends had lukewarm Steamer player counts. However, that hasn’t stopped Firewalk Studios from actively speaking about the future of the shooter. PlayStation and Firewalk have now finally revealed the game’s content roadmap in a recent PlayStation.Blog post
Firewalk Reveals Concord Post-Launch Roadmap
While Concord’s release is right on the horizon, the game’s beta did not do much to excite players’ interest in the game. Although there’s a clear lack of enthusiasm among the Concord steam players, Firewalk Studios is committed to the project.
Alongside revealing that Concord preload has finally gone live today, PlayStation has given us a peek at the game’s content strategy for the upcoming month. Concord Season 1, dubbed as “Season: The Tempest,” is going to be released in October 2024 and feature a new Freegunner playable character, map, and additional rewards.
Concord Season 2 is planned for release in January 2025. Although there still isn’t a name for the second season, it will bring the same amount of additions as the first season alongside a new game mode.
The game’s roadmap also mentions a slice of details about the Season 3 update, hinting at an April 2025 release date, but with the content additions still remaining a mystery.
That’s not all, though! Each new season in the shooter will bring weekly cinematic vignettes enhancing the title’s unique narrative. The game won’t feature a Battle Pass, and content updates will be absolutely free of cost!
Concord’s Unique Monetization Strategy Might Save it
There’s no doubt that Concord‘s monetization strategy differs drastically from that of its live-service competitors, such as Valorant and Overwatch, as the game isn’t free-to-play with the paid content updates and battle passes.
Instead of plaguing the game with microtransactions and battle passes, Firewalk will charge players just $40 upfront, with the only additional costs being the in-game cosmetics, which won’t have any impact on your gameplay.
Being another live-service game in an already competitive landscape, the player number will stand as the lifeblood of the shooter game. If the game maintains a poor player base, it runs the risk of getting completely axed. However, such monetization tactics could prove to be beneficial for the game.
It remains to be seen if the studio’s strategy could work for Concord PC, and the console player base. The general lack of excitement and the blow-up for Marvel Rivals are going against the studio’s most biggest project. Let’s hope Firewalk’s strategy works out; otherwise, the future isn’t looking too bright for anyone involved in the project.
