Many viewers find it hard to believe that Tom Cruise was actually hanging outside of an Airbus A400M airplane in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) but it is true. The actor performed the entire sequence himself without any stunt doubles.

A scene in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation saw actor Tom Cruise hanging from a real plane as it takes off. The scene is authentic as no visual effects were used and Cruise performed the stunt 8 times five thousand feet in the air.

The actor explained that he did the stunt to “outdo himself” after the actor climbed Burj Khalifa in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011). The actor wanted to know what it feels like to be on the wing or on the side of the airplane. The crew faced several difficulties while shooting the scene.

The crew was worried about the actor’s safety

Everyone was concerned about Tom Cruise’s safety as the stunt was indeed very risky. The actor wanted to know what it feels like to be on the wing or on the side of the airplane. There were several concerns, including bird strikes and wind resistance on the runway.

A special wind-resistant custom frame was built for the camera and was mounted onto the left wing of the Airbus A400M. Cruise also had trouble keeping his eyes open due to wind and runway particles, so he got a special lens that covered his entire eyeball.

It was revealed that Tom Cruise got hurt six times while filming Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. During the airplane scene, Cruise got hit by a small pebble while filming one of the takes. The actor later explained that the impact was so hard that he was sure that he got a major injury. He said he was afraid to look but fortunately, the pebble did not injure him and he was amazed to see how small the pebble was.
