Kentaro Miura created one of the best seinen manga in existence and passed away, leaving fans in eternal mourning. The author made readers brawl their eyes out with the developments in Berserk but couldn’t finish it. Thus, the responsibility fell on Kouji Mori, Miura’s mangaka friend and the only person who knows the ending of Berserk.

As an old interview with Miura surfaced, fans realized that the author had one wish for Berserk that never came to fruition. While the wish seems next to impossible, there’s no harm in dreaming, and maybe one day, fans can make his dream come true.

In the interview, Kentaro Miura began to discuss the prospects of Berserk receiving a movie. The author first began to discuss what would happen if the project was handed over to Hollywood. According to him, Hollywood would prefer to have a finished story before they could proceed with a production. Or the creator has to leave it on the production team to do whatever they want with Berserk. The author did not seem completely on board with the idea of leaving his creation in the hands of just any director.

He then explained that if the movie chooses to follow Guts’ journey, then it will be a faithful adaptation. But if it’s the Falcon Troup that becomes the center of attention, then it is possible that many aspects of the original story will be changed.

This is when Kentaro Miura confessed who he actually wanted to direct Berserk if it ever received a movie adaptation:

Could we ask Guillermo del Toro?

Guillermo Del Toro is a renowned film director, producer, screenwriter, and author. He has films like Hellboy, Pacific Rim, The Shape of Water, Pans Labyrinth, and many more under his wings. So of course, any mangaka or author would love to have their story adapted by Del Toro. Unfortunately, the author passed away before Berserk could receive a live-action movie.

The Issues Berserk Might Face in a Live-Action Version

Berserk is a tricky manga to adapt, be it into anime, movie, or live-action. The issues are largely generated from the intense gore, brutality, and suffering showcased in the series. This could also be the reason why Berserk has not received a complete anime adaptation yet, despite its popularity among the masses.

Guts has been abused since his childhood, and he was sexually assaulted, resulting in his fear of attachment and intimacy. Casca was brutally defiled in front of Guts. There are many more instances in which Kentaro Miura did not shy away from showing the lawlessness and cruelty in the world of Berserk.

These scenes are hard to adapt into an anime or movie since they could get edited out or censored. But curing out these arcs and scenes takes away from the natural development of the manga and leaves several plotholes. This is also why the past anime adaptations of Berserk have been hated. They also skipped out on some major character development arcs.

If Berserk needs a true adaptation, it might become hard for studios to sell it. Thus, until people are ready to see extreme brutality on the big screens, any movie project for Berserk will remain on hold.

You can watch the Berserk anime on Crunchyroll.
