According to a new report by Liam Robertson of Did You Know Gaming?, Crash Bandicoot 5 was in development at Toys for Bob. The game was supposed to feature a crossover with Spyro the Dragon, among other exciting concepts but was cancelled by Activision.

Initially, there were two concepts that were considered for the game. The first concept was that Crash 5 would have elements from 2004 game Crash Twinsanity, including the return to the Academy of Evil, which would have been the main setting of the game.

There would have been previous Crash villains in the game. The game would have taken some inspiration from Psychonauts, allowing Crash to enter the minds of villains such as Neo Cortex, Pinstripe, Tiny Tiger, and many more. This all led to another concept, the collaboration with Spyro.

In this crossover concept, Uka Uka would use a interdimensional portal to travel to Spyro’s universe and corrupt the Dragon Elders. Uka Uka would be the main antagonist and the two characters would come together to take Uka Uka down. Both the characters would have playable.

The game was shaping up to be an amazing AAA 3D platformer title. It would have had thrilling gameplay and special moves, for example, team-up moves, with Crash riding Spyro and Spyro carrying Crash. Unfortunately, it did not make past the pre-production phase and was cancelled in November 2020.

As per the report, the game was canceled because the previous game in the franchise did not meet publisher Activision’s high-sales targets. Activision had hoped that for the sales to be around the N. Sane Trilogy, however, the game did not see that kind of sales.

For reference, the N. Sane Trilogy reportedly garnered more than 20 million sales all over the world. Also, Crash 4 sold 402,000 digital copies in the first month of its release and the N. Sane Trilogy sold 520,000 copies in just one day of its release.

The difference is big, and Activision decided that the next game was not worth the gamble and ultimately scrapped the game. Fans are saddened with this report of the game being canceled but hope that the developers pick the game again sometime in the future.
