The new Apple TV+ crime series Criminal Record is an unnerving criminal tale that does a wonderful job of keeping the plot shrouded in mystery for the audience. This is an unnerving television. It is a modern-day hard-boiled detective story with intricate plots, moral ambiguity, and plenty of suspense and intrigue.

Created by writer/director Paul Rutman (Five Days, Indian Summers, and The Deep), the story follows two characters in a tension-filled chess match full of twists and turns to solve the central mystery.

Here’s what happened in Criminal Record Season 1, Episodes 1 and 2:

  • Detective Sergeant June Lenker (Cush Jumbo) is a respected member of the police force who investigates a disturbing emergency phone call claiming that her boyfriend is responsible for a murder and the wrong man was put in prison.
  • That man is Errol Mathis, who was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Adelaide Burrowes. Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty (Peter Capaldi) put Errol Mathis away for the murder of Adelaide Burrowes. Mathis is currently in prison for the murder.
  • An emergency dispatcher calls June, thinking she has the same woman on the end of the line. Her name is Maria de Souza. Her boyfriend, Clive Silcox, is abusing her and trying to break down the bathroom door where she’s hiding.
  • June races to the scene. Clive murders Maria and throws her out of the eighth-floor apartment window. He escapes, injuring June. She later arrests Clive, but Daniel influences the brass, who tells June she cannot ask Clive about the Burrowes murder.
  • June asks anyway and is reprimanded. Daniel then produces forensic evidence that the two calls are from two different women. An activist then approaches June, who convinces her that the original caller is still out there.

Predictions for Criminal Record Season 1 Episode 3:

  • Is June’s partner sensitive to her needs? Leo (Stephen Campbell Moore) is a psychiatrist who equates June’s concerns about racism and sexism at her job with paranoia. They are also raising a mixed-race child, which we predict will lead to marital issues.
  • Who is the mystery caller who called the emergency hotline that led to questions about Errol Mathis’s innocence? My guess would be Errol’s mother, Doris. However, the caller did sound younger on the line.
  • What is Daniel trying to hide? He does approach his former underling, Tony, now in use of a wheelchair, to double check and cover up any mistakes. We can speculate that maybe Daniel handed Tony evidence on Errol.
  • Will June lose her job and succumb to the pressure from the professional standards “rat squad” that is investigating her? No, she will prevail and thwart Daniel’s best efforts. But at what cost? This could lead to escalation and maybe put June’s family (maybe her son?) in danger.
