The new Apple TV+ crime series Criminal Record is an unnerving criminal tale that does a wonderful job of keeping the plot shrouded in mystery for the audience. This is a modern-day hard-boiled detective story with intricate plots, moral ambiguity, and plenty of suspense and intrigue.

Created by writer/director Paul Rutman (Five Days, Indian Summers, and The Deep), the story follows two characters in a tension-filled chess match full of twists and turns to solve the central mystery. This holds true in the Criminal Record episode “Kids in the Park,” which gets off to a tragic start.

Here’s what happened in Criminal Record Season 1, Episode 3:

  • A drive-by shooting sends everyone running for their lives, except for Isaac Witlow, a small child who was shot and is now in a coma. This is nothing new to the area. Per DS Kim Cardwell, there are 17 gangs that they know of.
  • Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty (Peter Capaldi) is on the scene. Detective Sergeant June Lenker (Cush Jumbo) was also present. Hegarty compliments Lenker ever so politely but backhandedly about her being wrong about the two callers in the Burrowes murder case.
  • Lenker and the activist, Sonya Singh. They have a deal. Lenker follows Hegarty to give Sonya information to help with the Errol Mathis murder. Sonya then helps the detective with the Hayes Lane caller. Sonya has asked her activist “do-gooders” about the caller handing out flyers.
  • She now urges Lenker to look over the Errol case file with a professional eye. June wonders why there is no motive in the case for Mathis to murder his wife. She visits Errol in prison at Whitecross. He explains that he stands by his alibi. Also, he confessed after the third morning because he was tired and on drugs.
  • Jason Reeve is the suspect in the shooting of Isaac Witlow. His DS, Tony, tells Hegarty that June was at Whitecross and probably interviewing Errol. While running the operation, Hegarty witnesses Reeve approach June from behind. She is standing guard, securing the perimeter at a barricade.
  • He is prepared to let Reeves shoot June to allow Reeves to get away. However, an underling comes into the surveillance van. This startles Hegarty, who is then forced to warn June about Reeves. The fugitive pulls his gun, and June is not hit as she jumps behind a car.
  • Reeves is later caught, and the murder weapon is confiscated. June is asked to sit in on the press conference. Moments before, she receives a return call from a detective who arrested and let go of Patrick Burrowes, Errol’s son. An investigator leaned on his boss, who allowed Patrick into his custody and was not charged. That officer was Daniel Hegarty.

Predictions for Criminal Record Season 1 Episode 4:

  • Why is June’s mother, Maureen, paranoid about the police? Her husband and June’s father had a dark history. Leo (Stephen Campbell Moore) equates June’s own thoughts on racism and sexism within the department instilled from Maureen’s paranoia. This will lead to the eventual separation of June and Leo.
  • Why is Hegerty helping Patrick? He could feel guilty for putting his father away for something he didn’t do. Could it be that Daniel is a good guy?
  • Speaking of children, Daniel’s next play to shut down June will be going after her child, right? Besides pulling the trigger, what other avenue does he have besides pulling the trigger?
  • Placing June at the press conference and in the spotlight will only empower her to push further into the Errol murder case.
  • I have a sinking feeling that Errol will succumb to depression.
  • Is Sonya telling the truth, or does she have an ulterior motive for the Errol investigation? My gut tells me there is a plot twist coming with this character.
