With sheer luck, Buggy has made it to the ranks of an emperor in One Piece and refuses to budge from his mantle. In an attempt to humble the great captain Buggy, Mihawk reveals how the Cross Guild compares to the other Yonko crews.

He clearly lays out their positioning on the power scale and it doesn’t look that great. His revelation highlights the weakness in Buggy’s approach while giving us a taste of what it takes to be the Pirate King.

The Delusions and Aspirations of Yonko Buggy

While luck and laughs are his strongest pursuits, this episode is one time when Buggy’s aspirations shine the brightest. Amidst the back and forth with Crocodile and Mihawk, he voices the foundation of his dreams. Even after all these years, he bears respect and passion for the title of Pirate King. Initially ready to follow Shanks in his run to the One Piece, he is now ready to fight him for it.

His conviction is admirable but it’s accompanied by a streak of delusion. Crocodile calls him out on this by pointing at his conceitedness. But Mihawk’s declaration clearly puts things into perspective.

As soon as Buggy shares his intention to go and get the One Piece, Mihawk points at how fighting Shanks, Luffy, and Blackbeard is insanity in itself. Even though Mihawk is known to be Shanks’ contemporary in strength and status, he doesn’t have a crew of infamous pirates backing him up. This holds true for Blackbeard and Luffy as well. His confession sheds light on how Buggy and his own perception of Shanks does not coincide.

In the hunt for One Piece, the Cross Guild is severely lacking power. And considering how he is probably the strongest in the Cross Guild, a fight with the other Yonko Crews screams of nothing but trouble. They need more power to face the others in an all out race to the greatest treasure in the world.

As soon as the episode aired, fans were quick to voice their agreement with Mihawk. Fans pointed at the power dynamics of the Cross Guild and what a potential matchup with the strongest pirates would look like.

While Crocodile and Mihawk are aware of this fact, Buggy seems to have his own ideas about winning the race. Seemingly he understands that a proper fight would lead them nowhere, but there are other ways to outsmart their contemporaries. How he intends to do that when his opponents are bloodthirsty Blackbeard Pirates is something unknown to us. But the episode makes one think how the power dynamics have changed over the years and the importance of having strong comrades to back you up in the vast treacherous seas.

One Piece is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
