After over a decade, CD Projekt Red has officially wrapped up development on Cyberpunk 2077. The open-world RPG, that launched in 2020 in a disastrous state, won’t receive any further expansions.
However, it seems this was not always the plan. Leaked files suggest that a DLC called ‘Moon‘ was in the works at the studio that would have added a new map to the game. The expansion never came to be, but could it potentially make its way into the sequel?
A ‘Moon’ DLC for Cyberpunk 2077 Got Scrapped
Data that originally leaked after a security breach at CD Projekt in 2021 just re-emerged online. A user on 4chan shared a batch of files on the platform that point to an alleged ‘Moon‘ DLC for Cyberpunk 2077 that ended up on the cutting room floor.
The leaked images include file depositories, a map, and concept art of an unannounced expansion that was seemingly supposed to take place on the Moon. A map layout the size of about a quarter of Night City as well as various concepts of moon bases, vehicles, and labs are among the files.
CD Projekt Red is officially done working on the game, which means the scrapped DLC won’t be seeing the light of day. Phantom Liberty, which shipped in 2023 to high critical acclaim, will be the only expansion for the base game.
This doesn’t mean that the ideas for the DLC, which would have added a whole new area to the game, won’t still make their way onto players’ screens. They might just have to wait for Cyberpunk 2.
The Sequel Might Let Players Journey to the Moon
Cyberpunk 2 is currently in early development under the codename Project Orion and could be the title where the Moon from the canceled DLC could come to play. While the base game is set on Earth, the Moon actually has a lot of lore surrounding it, which could make it a perfect setting for the sequel.
Throughout the game, several story lines and quests suggest that the world is on the precipice of yet another corporate war. While nothing has been officially confirmed, this could set up the sequel and its lunar setting.
Earth’s satellite was colonized decades before the events in Cyberpunk 2077, and currently has two major cities. Both the Arasaka and Militech corporations are running mining operations on the surface using cutting-edge technology and labs.
While limited, the lore known about the Moon indicates that there is plenty that could be explored in Cyberpunk 2. This is merely speculation at this point and we will likely have to wait several years until the sequel launches to find out.
