Daniel Craig ruled the entertainment industry as the beloved Casanova/agent, James Bond for over a decade. From Casino Royale to No Time to Die, he gave the role his absolute hundred percent before parting ways and allowing other actors to take over. After all, the show must always go on, right?

According to some reports, Queer has commenced its filming. The film will be shot completely over at Rome’s refurbished studios, the Cinecittà Studios, and will be set in the city of Mexico. The film is based on William S. Burroughs’ 1985 novel of the same. Queer will see Daniel Craig playing the author’s alter-ego, Lee, an outcast American immigrant living in Mexico.

Craig’s character starts to become madly infatuated with a younger discharged American Navy serviceman, Allerton, who will be played by Drew Starkey. Fans are especially excited to see Starkey’s performance in the film as it will be the most prominent role of his acting career. Starkey is most popular for his role as Rafe Cameron in Netflix’s Outer Banks. He was also seen in The Hate U Give and Love, Simon.

Here’s what fans are saying on Twitter:

It goes without saying that Craig will effortlessly pull this off just like any of his other roles, however, there’s a chance that Starkey might steal the spotlight away from him this time. We are absolutely stoked to see their chemistry on screen!

Queer will be directed by Luca Guadagnino who has directed a wide array of incredible films including, Bones and All and Call Me by Your Name. He is also responsible for the upcoming Challengers which stars Zendaya as Tashi Donaldson.

According to sources, Lesley Manville, Jason Schwartzman, and Henrique Zaga will also be part of Queer. The film’s screenplay is given by Justin Kuritzkes, who is once again collaborating with the director after Challengers. Another member of the Challengers’ team, costume designer Jonathan Anderson, will be getting onboard the Queer train. Anderson stated, “It is one of my all-time favorite books. And the film has everything – Mexico, lots of drugs, and Daniel Craig.”

Since Guadagnino’s Call Me by Your Name was nominated for four Oscars at the 90th Academy Awards, (and won one of them), we have a lot of expectations from Queer!

A release date has not been set for the film yet.
