As Daredevil Season 3 closes out, we see Wilson Fisk volunteer to stay in prison as long as his wife, Venessa, remains untouched by the law. Foggy, Matt and Karen begin to work together again, and Benjamin Poindexter seeks treatment for his spine, after finding himself paralyzed by Wilson Fisk.

Poindexter finds himself being operated on by Kenji Oyama, becoming the subject of an experiential surgery to restore his spine. Kenji Oyama is also known in the comics as Dark Wind, a powerful Japanese operative functioning in the Second World War. The character was obsessed with making the perfect Japanese soldier and found a way of bonding adamantium with the human skeleton. His research included extensive notes, ones which were stolen and eventually used by the United States Government to create the Weapon X program.

This program was responsible for grafting adamantium onto Wolverine’s skeleton, making him the ultimate weapon for the government to deploy, before Professor X took him in.

As mentioned in the show, while Oyama’s expertise with Adamantium is revered in the comics, the metal that was used to repair Poindexter’s spine was something called Cognium Steel. This is a completely different metal with a  short history in comics. It is a metal that is considered to have memory, able to retain its original shape when its work is done. In the comics, the metal exists in its pure form but has to be used in conjunction with steel in the MCU.

This material is immensely powerful but is also very easy to transport because it lends itself well to being turned into small, easily transportable cubes. It is a unique metal invited by Oracle. Inc on Earth 616. Oracle Inc. was an organisation created by Namor after he brought out the oil company Parallel Conglomerate, to spread awareness among surface dwellers about the environment.
