2023 has been a terrible year for DC Studios and it is about to get worse as the studios’ next film, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, is expected to be another massive loss for them. As per projections, the film will probably end up being one of the worst superhero movies of all time. Multiple sources have revealed that the test screenings were disastrous as people were walking out of the theatres.
The budget of the film is already more than what DC expected due to several reshoots and now they only have one month to make final changes in order to save the movie. The production of the movie began in 2019 and since then it has faced several setbacks, including actress Amber Heard’s court case with her ex-husband, Johnny Depp.
DC only has one month to fix Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
A cinephile who goes by the name Luiz Fernando recently revealed in a viral tweet that people are now treating Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom as a joke. The user revealed that the trailer of the movie ended by inviting audiences to watch it in IMAX on December 22 and someone in the audience yelled, “Nope!” Despite so many efforts from the studios, people are just not interested in watching the movie.
The film is projected to bring in roughly $32-42 million on its opening weekend. If the projection turns out to be correct, then Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be a huge financial loss for DC Studios, considering they’ve spent $205 million on the film so far. The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on December 22, 2023, so they only have roughly one month to make the film more exciting.
What’s next for DC Studios?
Given the poor performances of Blue Beetle (2023), The Flash (2023), and Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023), many may assume that this is the end for DC Studios, however, the co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, has already planned the future of the franchise. Gunn is currently working on his soft reboot of the DCEU, this means that some actors from DCEU will return while others will be replaced.
The story of the DCU is divided into chapters, starting with Gods and Monsters, which will begin in 2024 with the animated series Creature Commandos. The spotlight is on Gunn’s upcoming film, Superman: Legacy (2025), as it is believed to be the true beginning of this new DC Universe.
