Deadpool & Wolverine seems to be bringing back classic characters like it’s collecting limited edition Pokémon cards. The upcoming film did the inauguration with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, followed by a blend of Deadpool buddies (hello there, Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead) and fellow X-Men (cue Pyro and Yukio). We even have Sabretooth gracing the superhero flick with his presence.

As if the flame of excitement isn’t blazing enough, Ryan Reynolds’ recent cryptic post has fans convinced that they might get to see the Merc With a Mouth join forces with the Avengers.

Did Ryan Reynolds Just Drop an Avengers-Sized Bomb?

In the most Ryan Reynolds fashion, the Canadian actor and producer hopped on Instagram to bewilder fans (once again), with a cryptic selfie of him wearing a cap with the Avengers logo embedded in it. An Avengers logo with an Anarchy ‘A’ painted over it, to be precise (via Deadpool Updates on X).

A couple of days ago, the actor who plays Wade Wilson in the Deadpool franchise posted an equally puzzling video showing a blue Avengers logo flag flapping in the wind with the same Anarchy ‘A’ painted over it. Without any explanation whatsoever. Reynolds is just like his on-screen character for pulling off this stunt, an absolute menace.

While this could mean literally anything, Marvel fans are inclined to believe that this heralds an Avengers line-up in the MCU before the next outing of the iconic superhero squad in Avengers 5.

The theory doesn’t appear too far-fetched either considering how Reynolds managed to bring back Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine despite the character meeting a brutal end in Logan. So, Deadpool teaming up with the Avengers in the Shawn Levy-directed film would probably be a cakewalk for him.

It’s certainly the kind of bombshell fans would expect from the Free Guy star in perhaps one of the most anticipated Marvel films ever.

Deadpool 3 Director to Reportedly Helm Avengers 5

The film, previously titled Avengers: Kang Dynasty, was going to be shepherded by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton. But the filmmaker left the coveted position vacant in late 2023, shifting his focus to other Marvel projects instead (via Deadline).

Earlier this month, Deadline reported that Levy – who oversaw the direction of Deadpool & Wolverine – is being considered the first choice for the next Avengers film. Meanwhile, Avengers 5 is believed to unite over 60 MCU characters with the likes of Mark Ruffalo and Tom Hiddleston reprising their legendary roles.

However, neither Levy nor Marvel Studios have confirmed or denied the rumors yet, but the latter is said to be waiting for a word from the Stranger Things co-producer.

Avengers 5 is set to premiere on May 1, 2026.

Deadpool & Wolverine will be in cinemas on July 26, 2024.
