Known for her portrayal of Bernadette Rostenkowski on The Big Bang Theory, Melissa Rauch quickly became a fan favorite following her introduction in Season 3. Her character’s quirky charm and dynamic relationship with Howard Wolowitz made her an integral part of the show’s ensemble.
However, it was in Season 6, during a Halloween episode, when Rauch experienced an unanticipated moment of embarrassment. Following a long day of filming in Smurf’s attire, Rauch found herself in an awkward predicament when she accidentally exposed herself to the crew while getting out of her elaborate costume.
The Big Bang Theory Stars Recalled the Grueling Smurf Makeup Experience
Episode 5 of Season 6 of The Big Bang Theory, The Holographic Excitation, follows the group celebrating Halloween at Stuart’s comic book store, with Howard and Bernadette dressing up as Smurfs.
Bernadette, played by Melissa Rauch, humorously remarks about the extensive effort it took to achieve her look, noting, “I’m gonna be washing paint out of my Smurf for a month!” And the actress, who played the character, echoed the sentiment during a Paley Center for Media convention.
Talking about getting ready for their Halloween look, both Simon Helberg and Rauch shared that the process of applying and removing the blue Smurf makeup was quite intensive and time-consuming.
“I’m still wiping it out,” the actress said, as Helberg added, “That was quite a quite an ordeal.” The actor further recalled that they found themselves in a sort of “meditative state” in exhaustion while the makeup artists applied and removed the makeup.
Helberg also noted that while he finished the removal process first, Rauch had an unexpectedly awkward experience during the makeup removal process.
An Exhausting Night on Set Led to an Embarrassing Moment For Melissa Rauch
After Simon Helberg insisted, Melissa Rauch shared the awkward incident that she faced while getting her Smurf makeup removed. The actress shared that she was exhausted and had fallen asleep as the crew continued the lengthy process.
I have really sensitive skin, so they’re like packing me with hot towels, and I’m starting to fall asleep, and it’s two dudes, and then my regular makeup artist went out of the trailer to get some more hot towels.
The actress recalled that during the process she was asked to lift her legs so the crew could clean the remaining makeup from underneath. And it was during this that she inadvertently exposed herself to the crew members.
“So I lift my legs up and close my eyes, and I hear one of the guys go, ‘Huh,'” she recalled. When she later looked in the mirror, she realized what had just happened, and was surprised and embarrassed by her accidental exposure.
“And I was like, “Dear Lord Jesus, that’s my business!” she recalled, admitting that after realizing what had happened, she awkwardly added, “Long night,” before quickly returning to the process.
Wrapping up the story, she joked, “That is the tale of my Smurfette.” Rauch’s unexpected and awkward experience drew immense laughter from the audience.
