Ever since One Piece debuted over two decades ago, fans have witnessed Monkey D. Luffy’s consistent growth in order to become the Pirate King. Each arc in the series has introduced new challenges, driving Luffy to unlock powerful transformations known as his “Gear” techniques. However, it was Gear 5, which he unlocked during his fight with Kaido, that helped Luffy to surpass all expectations.
Luffy’s Gear 5 enabled him to fully tap into the potential of his Devil Fruit, embodying the Sun God “Nika” in every sense and attaining almost godlike power. With Gear 5 being described as Luffy’s peak, it raises the question: What will Luffy’s next power-up look like? Though many speculated about a Gear 6, recent hints from the plot imply that this may not be the direction Eiichiro Oda is heading.
Gear 5 as Monkey D. Luffy’s Pinnacle in One Piece
Luffy unlocked his Gear 5 during his battle with Kaido on Onigashima, marking the awakening of his Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika. The form drastically changed Luffy’s fighting style, giving him near-invincibility as he took on the persona of the legendary Sun God.
By bending the principles of reality itself, Gear 5 gave Luffy the ability to transform the battlefield into a cartoonish spectacle, and defy gravity. He had almost limitless mobility in battle thanks to his body’s ability to stretch, change, and react to blows in dramatic ways. As in episode 1071 of the One Piece manga, Luffy himself acknowledged that he had reached his peak with Gear 5.
Given that Luffy has already achieved what he considers to be his ultimate form, the likelihood of a Gear 6 being introduced seems slim. Instead of a new Gear transformation, Eiichiro Oda may shift the focus towards enhancing Luffy’s other abilities, specifically his mastery of Haki and the hidden potential of his Zoan-type Devil Fruit.
Monkey D. Luffy’s Next Potential Power-Up in One Piece
Particularly in the latter part of One Piece, Haki has played a crucial role in Luffy’s development. Luffy’s control of Haki became even more proficient as he faced more and more formidable and experienced opponents. Armament Haki gave him the ability to harden his body for offense and defense, while Observation Haki allowed him to predict and react to his opponents’ moves. In addition to this, Luffy possesses exceptional skill in using Supreme King Haki, a rare form of Haki that is claimed to place upon its user the qualities of a King.
Thus, as @thatonepiecetalk has discussed, moving forward, Luffy’s growth may be centered on refining his Haki even further. Even though Gear 5 is his physical peak, Oda has left the door open for Luffy to enhance his Haki to new heights.
There’s another possibility that Luffy may unlock a new primal form similar to what Kaido demonstrated. Kaido’s transformation into Azure Dragon during the Wano arc wasn’t just a regular Zoan transformation but something more untamed. As a Mythical Zoan-type, Luffy’s Devil Fruit may hold similar untapped potential. While Gear 5 allows him to embody the Sun God Nika’s playful, cartoonish abilities, there could be a more primal, Zoan-based form hidden within Luffy’s Devil Fruit; something that taps into raw, animalistic power.
As One Piece moving toward its final saga, Luffy’s next power-up will probably be something more subtle but still far more important than just another Gear. Whether it’s the deeper mastery of Haki or unlocking a hidden primal form within his Devil Fruit, the journey ahead will test Luffy in ways that go beyond mere physical strength, and it is through these challenges that he will rise to become the Pirate King.
