Two years ago, Marvel Studios introduced the Eternals in the MCU. Starring an ensemble cast, including Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, and Richard Madden, the movie follows immortal extraterrestrial beings re-emerging after hiding for thousands of years to protect Earth. Set in Phase Four of the MCU, the new superheroes failed to resonate with a significant portion of the extensive MCU fan base.
However, despite that it has grown a dedicated cult following over the past two years. And the MCU fans once again shared their polarizing opinions on X (Twitter) on the film’s second anniversary.
Eternals Continues to Divide the MCU Fans
There were many elements that contributed to the failure of Chloé Zhao‘s Marvel film Eternals. However, opinions about the film have ranged from passionate adoration to strong disapproval. And these discussions recently re-emerged on the X(formerly known as Twitter).
A fan shared a clip from the movie, saying, “I’ll never understand the Eternals hate like how could you not gag at this scene ALONE.” While many agreed with her, others stated why they had not been amazed with the movie.
Some described it as “one of Marvel’s greatest movies” and said that they are looking forward to a sequel. However, the ones who did not like the movie called it the “sh*ttiest out of the MCU.” Stating why they did not like the film, they said that the story had so much to fit into a movie.

I loved this movie

It wasn’t the fight scenes that made it bad. It was the inconsistency through out the movie, the characters themselves, and some HUGE plot holes.
It’s a decent movie, but definitely the shittiest out of the MCU.

I liked it,but had 2 issues with it.The 1st issue was the pacing itshould’ve been spread out into a mini series. The 2nd is the synergy with past Marvel properties was lacking.Between the we couldn’t interfere excuse, and Marvel not addressing the giant frozen🤖on earth.Humans like pic.twitter.com/C2UV1ivvhz

This is a movie that needed to be a limited series. Too many storylines and too little time, imagine if they did this to the Avengers!? But the acting and cinematography is gorgeous, streets say kevin feige had not see a movie with natural light before or since

They said that it had “inconsistency” and that it did not connect with the previous MCU projects, and did not address The Blip. With such endless discussions, Eternals continues to be the most polarizing Marvel film.
What is Eternals‘ Future in the MCU?
Along with a disappointing performance among critics, Eternals did not perform that great at the box office as well, grossing over $400 million at the box office. And there have been no recent updates about the immortals’ next appearance in the MCU.
There have been rumors suggesting that a potential sequel is in the works, but the studio has not released any official statement about it. Although there is not much available about their next appearance, the immortal beings are expected to show up in the MCU at some point.
So far, there have been several Eternals easter eggs in Marvel shows. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, Ms. Marvel, and most recently, Loki season 2 have featured a cameo from Kumail Nanjiani’s Kingo. So, the dedicated fan base could stay hopeful for the future appearance of immortals.
Eternals is available on Disney+.
