Aquaman 2 has unexpectedly achieved an incredible feat as it overtook The Flash at the Worldwide Box Office. The Jason Momoa sequel was plagued with serious issues since the start. From including a controversial actress to negative test screening feedback and a failed cinematic universe, there were no hopes for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

However, it looks like the film will achieve more than expected as it is headed to overtake Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam at the Global Box Office.

2023 has not been a year of superheroes. The superhero fatigue was evident as projects like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, The Flash, Shazam 2, and The Marvels became commercial disasters. Although the failing state of the DCEU was seen in the condition of Aquaman 2 as well, the project slowly crawled to outperform some significant films at the Box Office.

Will Aquaman 2 outgross Black Adam at the Box Office?

Aquaman, released in 2018, was the highest-grossing flick for the DCEU. The film was a billion-dollar grosser at the box office. However, the sequel did not enjoy the same fate after being embroiled in a series of troubles.

While Aquaman 2 was already in deep trouble due to the involvement of Amber Heard in the movie, the poor test screening results were also a negative factor. After release, it turned out very generic and could not pull in an audience like its predecessor. But it seems the audience has found it better than the recently-released flicks like The Flash and The Marvels.

According to The Numbers, the Jason Momoa starrer presently stands at a global total of $334 million. After earning $10 million domestically and $50 million internationally in its last weekend, the film has roped in over $100 million from its home box office and $234 million internationally. It has beaten The Flash, which earned $270 million worldwide.

The film is slated to end its box office run with $400 million and overtake Dwayne Johnson‘s Black Adam. The highly ambitious project, slated to change the DC hierarchy, could not collect more than $393 million worldwide. If the projection becomes true, Aquaman 2 will be the most profitable project since 2018’s Aquaman, even after its underwhelming marketing.

What is the future for Aquaman in the DCU?

It can not be denied that even after going through so much, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom collected an impressive figure. It has collected more than some highly ambitious projects that were recently released. Even though it is already confirmed that none of Zack Snyder’s Justice League cast will reprise their role in the DCU, the future of Aquaman looks secure.

Rumors have been there for a long time that Jason Momoa will leave the mantle of DC’s Aquaman and take the role of Lobo in the DCU. This confirms that similar to David Corenswet in Superman: Legacy, a new Aquaman would also find himself in the DCU. However, the commendable box office gross of Aquaman 2 amidst a series of disasters proves that the franchise value of this superhero is high.

It must also be noted that despite the abysmal critic reviews and the 35% rotten score on RT, the audience reviews are positive. Contrary to the critics, most of the audience loved the movie and showered it with an 81% audience rating on RT.
