Tom Cruise is the greatest actor of this generation, as he is a global icon who would play larger-than-life roles. The actor prefers to play his stunts by himself, no matter how dangerous they are, from jumping off of buildings to jumping off a cliff, he can do it all. Hence, it is right in its manner to state that Cruise is the most entertaining performer that this generation has witnessed.
As a result, having Tom Cruise on their project would give them immense confidence as his presence is enough to make any film to be a massive success at the box office. However, this was not the case with Paramount as the actor’s charismatic presence was not enough for the studio to make them the highest-grossing studio in 2023, and not only that Paramount fell immensely short behind Disney in terms of revenue.
Tom Cruise’s Presence Wasn’t Enough For Paramount To Earn More Than Disney
The year 2023 was full of immensely successful films, while giants like Marvel Studios lost their touch, as it looks like people have grown tired of superheroes. Regardless, there have been numerous films, which are considered to be a huge success as the movie earned praise from critics and made an indelible mark at the box office.
While one would think that Paramount would have ruled the box office in 2023, as it came up with films such as it came up with films like Scream VI, PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Killers of the Flower Moon, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves all these films have left a mark at the worldwide box office.
But more importantly it featured, one of the most anticipated films of the year, that is Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One which earned a whopping $566.3 million at the worldwide box office.
As the year comes to an end, a user comes up with the gross earnings of the top 5 studios on X, and surprisingly, Paramount couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity despite having Cruise on their boat.
Highest grossing studios in 2023 at the domestic box office:
1️⃣ Disney – $1.887B
2️⃣ Universal Pictures – $1.877B
3️⃣ Warner Bros. – $1.25B
4️⃣ Sony Pictures – $971M
5️⃣ Paramount – $840M pic.twitter.com/Od6SPgYwhj— The Hollywood Handle (@HollywoodHandle) December 27, 2023
Paramount Studio is the 5th most profitable studio and it’s nowhere close to Disney who claimed the top spot though their films failed to leave a lasting impression in the minds of the viewers, earning $1.887 billion at the worldwide box office.
Is Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible Franchise Dying?
One of the major reasons that Paramount is in the 5th spot, it’s because the studio tends to believe if they put enough money into the Mission Impossible franchise, they will be able to bring the hype surrounding this franchise back.
However, that is not possible as Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible franchise seems to be just one error after another, and it looks like the producers are throwing more money into it by showcasing jaw-dropping action scenes, locations, and stunts that would attract the viewers.
The franchise’s most recent project, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, was one such investment, where an entire train and track was built, only for it to get destroyed. Another instance of a dangerous stunt was when Tom Cruise jumped off a cliff on a motorbike 6 times.
But all these investments were for nothing and as per The Guardian, this sequel is the second lowest-grossing film in the entire franchise, that is it earned 567 million at the worldwide box office, which is significantly less when compared to that of Mission: Impossible – Fallout. These factors are the major reason why Paramount is not the highest-grossing studio of 2023.
Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol can be streamed on Paramount.
