The Star Wars franchise has legions of fans across generations. Popular series like The Mandalorian (2019) only added to the bountiful storylines and colourful characters. Numerous spinoffs have been launched too, among which is The Book of Boba Fett (2021), which was a web series launched on Disney+ in December 2021. The events of the series act as a continuation of those from The Mandalorian, and happen after the events of Return of the Jedi (1983).

After the first season, rumours are rife about Disney preparing for a second season soon.

The Book of Boba Fett Season 1 did not get universal praise

The first season of The Book of Boba Fett follows the escapades of the bounty hunter Boba Fett, played by Temuera Morrison, as he sets up his own criminal empire in place of Jabba the Hutt’s former territory. Pedro Pascal and Ming-Na Wen also reprise their roles as the Mandalorian and Fennec Shand from The Mandalorian and other Star Wars media. Shand is a mercenary working for Fett, while the Mandalorian is another bounty hunter who had been teamed up with earlier by Fett and Shand.

The first season did not get the response Disney would have counted on it to have received. Critics said that the roles of Shand and the Mandalorian were written well and executed to perfection, but popular opinion says that the writing and characterisation of Fett were underhanded by the production, to say the least.

The Book of Boba Fett (S1) received a 52% rating from Rotten Tomatoes, 7.3/10 from IMDb, and 6/10 from GameSpot.

Disney rumoured to have started work on S2

In spite of the mixed bag of responses received by The Book of Boba Fett S1, Disney is rumoured to have started work on a second season already. There is heady speculation that the writing for the season is already done and that the season is in the pre-production stages. Evidently, an imminent writers’ strike fast-tracked preparations for the second season and pushed it to the front burner.

The Book of Boba Fett S1 displayed how well Morrison played the role of Fett, but that the writers had decided to keep him off-screen more often than not. In fact, Boba Fett was undermined heavily in as many as two entire episodes, where the focus shifted to Din Djarin, Luke Skywalker and Grogu. Fennec was also underused in the pilot finale, and her role might be expanded upon in the second season. There is a good chance that the second season focuses on Star Wars’ Underworld, which was ruled by the Council of Hutts. The future is ripe with opportunity, and how Disney plans on veering the Star Wars ship through a fantasy industry dominated by the MCU and DCU remains interesting to watch.
