Dev Patel is set to return to the big screen after 2021’s The Green Knight in the upcoming action thriller Monkey Man. Judging by the trailer that was released last month, he is set to go on a bloody crusade against powerful people to avenge his mother’s death. The trailer promised a new avatar of the actor in the action space.
A new extended clip of the kitchen fight from the trailer has now been released and Patel looks like a million bucks performing some well-choreographed action sequences. He is seen taking down a bunch of thugs by using any object at his disposal including pans, knives, and even an oven. (via YouTube). The gritty and brutal action style reminds one of Keanu Reeves‘ John Wick franchise.
Patel seems to be extremely committed to the action sequences and like Reeves, is doing all the intense fighting and stunts himself. The film can be the start of a new action franchise that may even stand toe to toe with the John Wick franchise. It remains to be seen whether Patel’s first film as a director makes a splash and earns the love of audiences like Reeves’ beloved action franchise.
Jordan Peele Praises Dev Patel’s Incredible Dedication for Monkey Man at SXSW
Dev Patel‘s Monkey Man recently premiered at SXSW 2024 with a great response from audiences. Director Jordan Peele who co-produces the film with Patel was also present at the event and introduced the film and its director before the film’s screening. He had high praise for the film stating that it deserves to be seen on the biggest screen possible with a large crowd.
He further praised Patel for his amazing dedication to the film and poured his heart and soul into making the film more than just a typical action fare. Peele is in awe of Patel and how he made an action film that has great meaning and depth. He said (via Deadline)
“This is a film that simply demands to be seen in a theater with a huge rockstar audience. It’s a movie that proves that films can be all things. You can have a movie that has an amazing story, that has meaning and depth and still kick a bunch of people’s a**es. I can’t say enough about the man I am about to introduce here. I’ve never seen someone pour his heart, soul, body, mind, and energy into a film, into a story more than this man,”
The film reportedly received a standing ovation from the enthusiastic crowd at SXSW (via Deadline). The film seems to be a bonafide hit for Patel and Peele seems to be incredibly confident about its potential. The film which also stars Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Sobhita Dhulipala, Sikandar Kher, Vipin Sharma, and Ashwini Kalsekar hits theatres on April 5, 2024.
