2024 is going to be a huge year for video game lovers, featuring animated projects like Devil May Cry, the return of established series like Halo Season 2, and film adaptations like Borderlands, all in the pipeline. Several other projects are currently in production, and fans might be lucky if these projects make their way into the year’s calendar.
These ten projects have secured release dates in theaters or on streaming platforms for 2024 or have received confirmation from studios about their scheduled release. Notably, at least four of them are returning projects, showing the appeal of video game adaptations.

Devil May Cry
Adi Shankar acquired the rights to Hideki Kamiya’s Devil May Cry game series in 2018. Following the success of his animated series, Castlevania, on Netflix, Shankar aimed to build a ‘Bootleg Multiverse’ with the Devil May Cry animated series. A first-look teaser was released in September 2023, and Netflix announced in November that the series is scheduled for a 2024 release.
Halo Season 2
Halo video game fans were not thrilled with the first season of the series adaptation. However, the series earned a second season owing to its popularity among the general audience, as it became Paramount+’s second most-watched original series. Pablo Schreiber and Jen Taylor will reprise their roles in Season 2, scheduled to premiere on the platform on February 8, 2024.
Fallout
The post-apocalyptic game series is set to receive an Amazon Prime Video series adaptation created by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner. Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks, the current owners of the game series, will co-produce the film with Kilter Films. Ella Purnell takes on the lead role of Lucy, a young Vault Dweller. Fallout will premiere on the streaming platform on April 12, 2024.
Knuckles
Knuckles the Echidna from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will make a return in this spinoff based on the character. Idris Elba reprises his role in the miniseries, which is set to premiere on Paramount+ in early 2024. John Whittington, a screenwriter in the second film, and Toby Ascher, a producer on both films, will serve as the creators.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
The third film adaptation of Sega’s video game series aims to break records like its predecessors. The first two adaptations became the highest-grossing video game film adaptation at the time of their release. Unfortunately, Jim Carrey will not be returning in this third film due to his possible retirement. A follow-up to Knuckles, the film is scheduled to be released on December 20, 2024.
Sonic Prime Season 3
Another adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog video game series, the animated series debuted its first on Netflix in 2022 and its second season in 2023. The third and possibly final season is set to premiere on January 11, 2024. Sonic Prime is co-produced by Sega of America, Netflix Animation, WildBrain Studios, and Man of Action Entertainment.
Borderlands
The looter shooter game set in a Western premise gets a cinematic adaptation with Cate Blanchett in the lead role. There was a bit of a behind-the-scenes hiccup as the script was rewritten several times. Director Eli Roth couldn’t return for the reshoots of the film, and Tim Miller took over for him, but Roth retains the sole directorial credit. The film will finally hit theaters on August 9, 2024.

Return to Silent Hill
The third film installment based on Konami’s horror survival game Silent Hill is also expected to hit theaters next year. While the first two films were critical failures, the fact that Return to Silent Hill is based on Silent Hill 2 raises expectations. Silent Hill 2 game received critical acclaim for its psychological horror story inspired by Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment.
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft
The Tomb Raider game series gets another screen adaptation, this time as an animated series on Netflix. Hayley Atwell follows in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander as the lead character Lara Croft. The series will follow the continuity of the Tomb Raider video game reboot trilogy and takes place after the events of Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
Arcane Season 2
The Emmy-winning Netflix series will be back for a second season in November 2024. Boasting a stellar cast including Ella Purnell, Hailee Steinfeld, and others, the animated series became an instant hit among audiences. Critics praised the steampunk style, animation, story, and worldbuilding. Many highlighted the fact that the film also appealed to those viewers who never played Arcane: League of Legends.
