Black Myth: Wukong currently stands as one of the most acclaimed titles of this year across different storefronts, with an edgier and bleaker depiction of Chinese mythology that people simply cannot get enough of.
Since its release, though, the game has been mired in a few debates and controversies, even if none could stop it from becoming one of the biggest single-player titles of 2024. Interestingly, however, one of the most significant controversies surrounding the game—the problem of diversity and inclusion—has been proven as being simply false.
Black Myth Wukong Fans Prove That the Game Does Contain Female Characters
When the initial embargo on the game lifted and reviews came flooding in, a peculiar review caught the eye of many that gave Wukong a surprising 3 out of 5. Suffice to say, many were curious to know just what was going on with the game.
However, what sparked the controversy was one of said review’s sectional points, that the game did not feature any female characters, along with how it reminded the reviewer of Game Science’s alleged misogynistic practices at work.
Now, to be fair and honest about the reviewer, it appears that not only did they not complete the game, they allegedly did not play the game at all, as seen from their comments after getting a ton of flak for the review.
As many would find out soon enough, Wukong does contain a ton of female characters, such as Kang-Jing Star, the Spider Sisters, Violet Spider, Ping Ping, and more. Not only that, but all of them are represented well by their Journey to the West counterparts.
The situation has, however, left many to wonder what the deal was with the review in the first place. For instance, some have simply chalked it up to the game not adhering to Western sensibilities, which, while somewhat inaccurate, does represent the current mindset surrounding character designs in video games.

Not only that, but others believe that the review, along with IGN’s older report, was a hit piece to promote some sort of propaganda.

Many, though, do blame the reviewer for not thoroughly exploring the game before dedicating an entire section of their review to the allegations and lack of inclusion.

At the end of the day, however, it feels like a situation blown out of proportion from both ends, and perhaps Game Science would now agree too, seeing how well their game continues to sell.
Black Myth Wukong Continues to Sell in Droves, Cementing It as One of 2024’s Very Best Titles
Despite all the initial discourse surrounding the game, Black Myth: Wukong does prove one thing, people care about receiving a good product more than anything else at the moment.
Although the review did cause some concern for many, at the end of the day, much of it was unfounded. Not only that, but the game smashed multiple records on the very day of its release.
Even now, the game continues to sit at well over a million concurrent players on Steam alone, which is quite an unprecedented feat for a single-player game. Along with this, many publications now report that the game has sold more than 15 million copies across different platforms.
With all the acclaim surrounding the title, it’ll undoubtedly contend for Game of the Year as one of the year’s best single-player titles, all while leaving behind a significant lesson on how to properly review a game with journalistic integrity.
