The actor has led some of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed movies, amassing countless film credits to his name, and continued to headlines for his power-packed performances before he retired from acting in 2022 after he got diagnosed with aphasia. His family made the shocking announcement earlier this year that Willis has been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, and this news left his fans heartbroken.

In a lengthy and emotional essay for Vogue, his daughter Tallulah Willis, whom he shared with his former partner Demi Moore, wrote how the actor’s family ascribed his early signs of dementia to “Hollywood hearing loss.” She penned that she initially thought her father had lost interest in her, but sadly, he was in the early stages of dementia. The actress further shared that when he became unresponsive, she even assumed that her father was “losing interest” in her, believing he was focused on her stepmother, Emma Heming Willis, and their two children.

Tallulah Willis also stated in the essay that the film Die Hard messed up her father’s ears. She also claimed that in the early stages of dementia, when he became unresponsive, she feared he was losing interest in her. Willis wrote,

“I’ve known that something was wrong for a long time. It started with a kind of vague unresponsiveness, which the family chalked up to Hollywood hearing loss: ‘Speak up! “Die Hard” messed with Dad’s ears.’ Later, that unresponsiveness broadened, and I sometimes took it personally.”

“He had had two babies with my stepmother, Emma Heming Willis, and I thought he’d lost interest in me. Though this couldn’t have been further from the truth, my adolescent brain tortured itself with some faulty math: I’m not beautiful enough for my mother, I’m not interesting enough for my father.”
