When Mark Wahlberg Dislocated His Shoulder

It isn’t uncommon for celebrities to get hurt while filming some physical scenes. It is, however, very rare to continue shooting a scene through all that pain and suffering just to get the real feel of emotions during a scene.

Mark Wahlberg exactly did that when he starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in the 1995 movie The Basketball Diaries. Talking about his iconic role in the movie, Wahlberg went on to describe a scene where his chasing led to him dislocating a shoulder. Being a dedicated actor, Wahlberg continued to shoot the scene and finished filming with a dislocated shoulder by his side! In an interview with GQ on YouTube, the actor recounted some of his iconic roles.

“Basketball Diaries was the second film that I had acted in. I played a very angry and violent heroin addict/high-school Basketball player. That was probably the movie that I worked the hardest to get the part. I had auditioned for probably about 7 times. My auditions became something of a thing for people to actually come and watch live.”

He further continued,

“And then finally, once me and Leo [Leonardo DiCaprio] were able to get in the room together, everybody agreed that I was the right guy for the part. Probably the most memorable thing for me was a scene when the guy rips us off and we chase him down and then finally catch him. I was running and jumping over different stuff. And in one take, my foot caught the edge of it, went to put my arms up to stop my fall and seperated my shoulder. Still finished the rest of the scene and then I was in a hospital at 7 o’clock in the morning!”

Well, that does seem something wild. Despite DiCaprio’s fame, the actor had once publicly stated that he would not like to work with Mark Wahlberg. Due to some unfortunate incidents, the two actors had formed a negative image of each other but they eventually put their differences aside.

Since it was Wahlberg’s second film, the actor was considered a “green actor” at that time. DiCaprio on the other hand, had found some traction in Hollywood and was more famous than Wahlberg. Not wanting to work with a green actor, the Titanic star had once said that he was “not making a movie with Markey Mark.” (as per Huffington Post)

“Leonardo said, ‘No way, I’m not making a movie with Marky Mark.’ As did a lot of other people. “We had a weird run in at an MTV Rock and Jock basketball game. I was performing in my underwear at half time and I think I had blocked a shot of his. I was a punk. I was a prick. I was not nice to Leo that day.”

After the weird run-in, both actors actually put their differences aside and started looking at the script together. Working on the sets of the 1995 film actually got the actors admiring and respecting each other more.
