James Cameron’s Avatar films are perhaps one of the most cherished treasures of Disney with the first installment in the series getting crowned as the highest-grossing movie in cinema history. The 2022 sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, also went on to become a glowing box-office success, amassing $2.3 billion globally. It’s safe to say that the Canadian filmmaker has helped make big bucks for Disney. No wonder the company’s CEO wants Cameron to direct an Alita sequel after its predecessor barely made a decent figure at the box office.

Disney is Reportedly Eyeing James Cameron for Alita Sequel

Alita: Battle Angel, a sci-fi action movie helmed by Robert Rodriguez, is adapted from Yukito Kishiro’s manga series, Gunnm (translated as Battle Angel Alita in English), which narrates the story of an amnesiac female cyborg. The 2019 film starred Rosa Salazar as the titular character along with Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, and Keean Johnson.

With a production budget of anywhere between $150-200 million, the cyberpunk action venture skirted off the ‘box-office bomb’ list after a rather concerning opening weekend. But it managed to churn relatively adequate numbers toward the end of its run, grossing about $405 million worldwide. In today’s economy, however, that figure would not amount to anything, especially given the pricey budget the movie was propped on. Not to mention, Rodriguez, who shepherded the venture, recently witnessed his latest Ben Affleck-led thriller, Hypnotic, fall from grace at the box office, and horribly so.
Following the 54-year-old filmmaker’s latest box office failure, sources claim that Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, is ready to give fans Alita 2 under one major condition, that James Cameron will be the one directing the sequel and not Rodriguez.

Will James Cameron Agree to Helm Alita: Battle Angel 2?

Cameron, 68, contributed significantly to the first film, both as a screenwriter as well as a producer. Not only that but he and Alita‘s co-producer Jon Landau had big plans for the sequel and even went so far as to take a virtual blood oath last December to get the project going. As per reports, however, Disney wants Cameron to go beyond just production endeavors and direct Alita 2 altogether.

While neither Cameron nor any Disney executives have exclusively commented on these rumors, insider sources state that the former might just be “considering” the offer. Between the Last Train from Hiroshima adaptation and three more Avatar films to go, however, it’s a mystery how the Academy Award-winning filmmaker plans on taking out the time for an Alita sequel, that is if he decides to helm the project.

Meanwhile, Landau recently revealed that a sequel with the previous director is already in the works which further complicates things. So, it’s best to take these rumors with a pinch of salt.
