Disney Streaming Service Name & Details Announced

Details surrounding Disney‘s upcoming digital streaming service have emerged including the service’s name and what it will contain.

According to an insider report, the new digital streaming service will be referred to as Disney Play. Disney CEO Bob Iger described this streaming service as one of the company’s biggest and most important ventures of 2019. Outside of this statement, the insider report only confirms what people have already known or suspected of the a la carte service.

Disney Play will have some unfortunate ramifications for competitors like Netflix. The service will end Netflix’s ability to provide subscribers with access to films and television shows that fall under the company’s umbrella. This does not just include direct Disney films either so the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Warsand soon to be 20th Century Fox library will all be pulled at some point before it launches. Ant-Man and The Wasp has previously been reported as the final MCU film to appear on Netflix before the Disney Play plan goes into effect. How this will impact the Marvel Netflix shows has yet to be confirmed but it has been speculated that they will continue to be produced and released on Netflix.

Disney Play is going to have a big year next year, according to the report. It is going to use some of Disney’s biggest productions of that year as a selling point for those who are not 100% certain about subscribing to it yet. Captain MarvelDumbo, The Lion KingToy Story 4,  Frozen 2 and Star Wars: Episode IX film have been listed as some of the biggest films that they can look forward to watching on Disney Play at some point in 2019.

As for pricing, the exact price point has yet to be announced. However, the report had indicated that with the light amount of content that the service is going to offer it will not be as expensive as Netflix. This is a similar approach to the recently announced $7.99 monthly subscription for the DC Universe streaming service, which is also cheaper than the Netflix subscription fee.
