The world is ready. The drums of Motunui have been rung. Disney is creating the iconic film as we speak and Moana of Motunui is on a hunt. A hunt to find other people except her tribe and Dwayne Johnson’s Maui is right there to help her.
Some of the plot details about a sequel to the 2016 film have been revealed and the world cannot control its excitement. From having somewhat of a similar arc to Avatar: The Way of Water, people are ready for another film in this iconic franchise.
Dwayne Johnson’s Moana 2 Could Break Records!
It was the year 2016 (a time when Fortnite wasn’t released!) when Disney created the iconic film Moana. With Dwayne Johnson voicing the role of Maui and Auli’i Cravalho as Moana, the film was an inspiration for teenagers and adults worldwide that facing your fears and following your destiny wasn’t such a bad thing after all.
Receiving high praise and love from around the world, the people were ecstatic about a potential sequel to the iconic film. Although there is a live-action remake in the works (and Johnson has a secret to keep), Moana 2 is going to be epic.
And we are not stating this based on our love for the original 2016 film. At the Annecy Animation Festival (via THR), some glimpses of Moana 2 were revealed alongside some story panels. While showcasing the sequel, Directors David Derrick Jr. and Jason Hand talked about what this film is going to be about.
“In Moana 2, her journey must take her to waters far beyond where any person has ventured,” said Jason Hand. David Derrick Jr. continued,
We begin our story with Moana, three years after the first film. She’s exploring the seas, searching for new islands, mapping the ocean, hoping to find other people.
He further stated,
As the people of Motunui have not seen anyone for generations, Moana knows that the ocean connects us. But to whom? Where are they? She’s looking for proof that others are out there. She’s curious why she hasn’t found anyone.
And so, it seems that the sequel will be about Moana mapping the world and hoping to find other people. The line “ocean connects us” is quite similar to another movie that was released in 2023 and fans might very well know which film we are referring to.
The plot sounds quite similar to James Cameron’s 2023 magnum opus Avatar: The Way of Water. With the philosophy that water connects us all, Jake Sully and Ney’tiri leave their home in the exploration of the planet of Pandora.
Disney’s Moana 2 Could Be Great For Dwayne Johnson’s Career!
Not to say that the actor is slacking or anything, but Dwayne Johnson was last seen portraying the role of Black Adam in the 2022 film. Although he did appear in Fast X, it was just a simple cameo. Giving importance to the world of WWE for a while, Johnson became active in wrestling events while taking a break from Hollywood.
The actor has, however, multiple upcoming projects to his name and one of them is Moana 2. Voicing the character of Maui and singing songs in the Disney film could be great for The Rock as it would be something that he hasn’t done in a while.
Dwayne Johnson voiced the role of Bank Robber #2 in the 2021 film Free Guy and fans loved the secret reference. Since the character was physically portrayed by Owen Burke, the voice was given by The Rock. With his reprisal as Maui in the upcoming film, Johnson will have the chance to voice an iconic character again!
With a strong plot and a resonating theme, Moana 2 could very well make it big in the world of Hollywood and cinema. The film is currently slated for a release date of 27 November 2024 in theaters across the U.S.
On the other hand, Moana, the film that started it all, received a rating of 7.6/10 on IMDB and a whopping 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. The 2016 film is available to stream on Disney+ in the U.S.
