Why Aang Should Have Killed Fire Lord Ozai in Avatar: The Last Airbender

Although Fire Lord Ozai was by no means a merciful lord during his reign on the throne, Aang and Ozai fought in the Battle at Wutong Forest for one final time. Naturally, Aang defeated the Fire Lord in a fiery battle but in the end, he decided to be merciful.

Instead of killing Ozai, he stripped him of his powers after which he was imprisoned, with his son Zuko becoming the king. Well, we all know how Ozai found his power. With his father tasking him to kill Zuko in his sleep, Ozai instead poisoned his own father with the help of his wife Ursa and became the reigning king. When Zuko disrespected a general, Ozai challenged him to the Agni Kai (a duel). Instead of the general, Ozai commanded that Zuko fight him instead. Not wanting to fight against his own father, Zuko was forever banished from the kingdom.

Now that you know the backstory, let’s get into the wild theory that cites another reason behind Zuko’s banishment. This theory states that since Zuko was already the least-liked son of Ozai, he wanted to get him out of his way so that his sister could take the throne.

Fire Lord Ozai Might Have Blamed Zuko For Ursa’s Disappearance!

As mentioned above, Ozai’s wife Ursa made a deal with Ozai that he would spare Zuko and instead poison his own father. In return, Ozai demanded that his wife flee the kingdom unless she might be harmed if the plans were discovered.

Ever since Ursa’s disappearance, Ozai treated Zuko very harshly. This Avatar theory is also backed by how Ozai considered Zuko weak and thought that he was unfit to rule. Ozai wanted him out of the way to make way for his sister Azula to be on the throne. Alongside Zuko, his uncle Iroh who supported Zuko was also sent away, thus, killing two birds with one stone. There has been a lot of evidence to support this theory and considering Fire Lord Ozai’s tendencies, the theory seems to indeed be true.

And although this theory sounds very convincing, in the end, it remains just that, a theory. Avatar: The Last Airbenderwhich ran for three seasons received a strong rating of 9.3/10 on IMDB and a whopping 100% on Rotten Tomatoes! Much like the recent Netflix live-action adaptation of the show, Avatar: The Last Airbender is available to stream on Netflix.
