Al Pacino Bounced Back With 1989’s Thriller: Sea of Love

With the mystery/thriller Sea of Love, Al Pacino made a strong comeback. Pacino was anxious to find a project that would display his abilities and regain his status as a prominent actor after the financial disasters of his previous movies. However, in the middle of his downfall, this project was presented to him by his attorney and Diane Keaton, a fellow actor. Given that Sea of Love was a huge commercial and critical success, it was certainly one of the finest things that ever happened to him.

According to Al Pacino, he agreed to play the lead role in Sea of Love because he was getting anxious about his previous movies not getting proper recognition worldwide. Moreover, he was not getting drafted for any movie roles for a long time which resulted in him having a very hard time. So when he was offered this role personally by Keaton, he did not second guess himself and applied for the lead role. He shared,

“Diane Keaton came into my lawyer’s office, and she looked at me and my lawyer, and she said to him, ‘Do you know who he is?’. The lawyer says, ‘Yeah’, she says, No you don’t, no, he’s an idiot, and you’ve gotta take care of him.

She says, ‘Al, come here, I’ve got something you’re going to like, it’s you, because you’ve got to get back, you’re not on the A-list – here it is’. She gave me Sea of Love.”

Diane Keaton significantly helped Pacino to bounce back with this movie and as it turned out, Sea of Love was an extreme success both critically and financially. It amassed a humongous total of more than $110 million from its worldwide box offices against a budget of $19 million. Moreover, the movie was also nominated for many big awards
