Andy Muschietti’s The Flash currently sits at the very top of the ‘worst superhero films in history’ list, but if there’s one redeeming quality about the film, it’s Sasha Calle’s embodiment of Supergirl. Fans, for the most part, seem to be pleasantly surprised by her portrayal of the superhero as the rest of the movie goes down the drain with little or no effort.

But it looks like the audience also has Charlize Theron and Gal Gadot to thank for Calle’s commendable iteration of the character, after all, they’re the ones who inspired the actress’ vision of Supergirl.

How Charlize Theron Influenced Sasha Calle’s Supergirl

David Leitch’s Atomic Blonde is perhaps one of the most famed and distinguished works of Charlize Theron; a classic spy thriller with stylized violence that emanates a very John Wick-esque air, the film played a colossal role in Sasha Calle‘s depiction of Kara Zor-El in The Flash, or at least Theron’s MI6 agent did.

In a recent conversation with Slash Film, Calle, 27, who created a vision board for her feature film debut as Supergirl, revealed how she put up a few crown jewels from the world of action on the said panel, the likes of which include Theron’s Lorraine Broughton and Gal Gadot‘s Amazonian Princess.

Since the Oscar-winning actress performed all her Atomic Blonde stunts by herself, Calle was convinced she could draw immense inspiration from Theron owing to the same. And in the case of the latter, well, who wouldn’t look up to Gadot’s Wonder Woman as an idol?

“I had seen Atomic Blonde and I put both of them [on it]. I put Gal Gadot in her Wonder Woman costume with a green screen fighting a stuntee, and I had to put Charlize [Theron] because she did all her own stunts. I thought that was the coolest thing.”

And it looks like it certainly paid off since Calle ended up doing a lot of her own stunts in the latest superhero flick, much like Theron did in the action thriller.

What is Supergirl’s Future in the DCU?

While neither the studio nor the actress has yet made any official announcements pertaining to her future in the DCU, the latter did voice her desire to take over the character in a potential project which could very well be Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about it, the Daytime Emmy nominee remarked how she “hoped to continue playing” the character in the foreseeable future, reveling at the prospect of being able to take over as the leading star in the forthcoming Woman of Tomorrow adaptation. She also mentioned how The Flash could serve as the perfect vehicle for a movie of a much larger magnitude, so it looks like Calle has her priorities splayed out clear as day.

The Flash is currently playing in theatres. Meanwhile, you can stream Atomic Blonde on Fubo Tv or rent/purchase it on Apple TV+.
