For a video game franchise as long-running as Final Fantasy, it becomes inevitable for some outdated titles to get remade with modern technological upgrades. This is important for the eventual longevity of the series, especially considering how the very first Final Fantasy game was released almost four decades ago, in 1987.

Although Square Enix has managed to keep the numbered games going all the way until 16 just last year, it has some completely revamped versions of some older titles planned for the future.

With the release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth less than a month away, there is one older game in the franchise that Square Enix seemingly does not want to touch anytime soon.

Final Fantasy 6 Does Not Seem to Be Getting a Remake in the Near Future

The sequel to Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade is launching at the end of this month.

YouTuber Julien Chieze got the chance to spend some time with a couple of the executives at Square Enix who are working on the Final Fantasy projects for the studio. The main topic of conversation between them was actually the upcoming remake sequel called Rebirth, but naturally, other Final Fantasy titles were also brought up.

When the idea of remaking the sixth-numbered game in the series was mentioned, producer Yoshinori Kitase did not really have the best of news for fans of the original title.

Since the video is completely in French, the Shinra Archeology Department was gracious enough to translate some important parts of the Final Fantasy interview for those who do not speak the language. During the video, Kitase expressed his disappointment about how it is not likely that the sixth game will be getting a remake anytime soon.

One cannot really blame Square Enix for this since, “up to Rebirth,” it has taken the team almost a decade to revamp Final Fantasy 7 from the ground up.

Since Final Fantasy 6 is obviously an older title than 7, it makes sense why the developers would be hesitant to remake it in the near future. According to Kitase, if the studio tried remaking the sixth mainline game, it could easily take almost two decades to complete the project. The producer believes that it would actually be much “bigger” than the FF7 remakes, especially because of the fact that it has way too many characters to bring back with modern upgrades.

Fans Are Not the Only Ones Who Want a Final Fantasy 6 Remake

Some people at Square Enix actually want to make a remake of Final Fantasy 6.

The Final Fantasy producer continued to talk about the prospect of a FF6 remake, stating that there are actually quite a few people working at Square Enix who want to give the project a go, but nothing seems to be materializing just yet. This is one of the things that bums him out about the whole situation, as he is currently unable to “respond in the affirmative,” which is equally disappointing for fans.

Of course, before the studio started remaking Final Fantasy 7, it did not feel like it would ever come to fruition, but considering the level of success that it has garnered, there is always a possibility of other revamped versions of older titles.

A fan tried suggesting a way in which the development phase for a potential Final Fantasy 6 remake could be drastically reduced, stating that Square Enix should just follow “a 1:1 solution” while making the project. But if the developers do that, then it would be nothing more than a lazy, pixelated port for newer gaming platforms.

Another user on X pointed out that the Final Fantasy 7 remakes show that the studio actually wants to put in effort into these revamped versions, which can be seen if one compares Intergrade and the upcoming Rebirth to their original outdated counterpart.
