Justice League very famously failed amongst its audiences for one sole reason, the director’s vision did not match that of the studio. Despite the release of the original Snyder Cut, after a huge fan campaign on Twitter, the original movie was a dud. No matter how many fans support Zack Snyder, his vision’s lack of congruency brought him a lot of problems. Studios can often be overbearing in terms of enforcing their ideas, completely disregarding what the director may be trying to achieve.

Whether it is Jon Favreau with Iron Man 3 or Snyder with the entirety of the DC Extended Universe, loss was seen from every angle. Even though fans saw positives in the movies, the studios did not. This made the director stand out in a way the studios did not like. However, ironically enough, even Eric Bana’s Hulk falls in a similar vision.

Josh Lucas Talks About The Reason Why Hulk Failed

Josh Lucas, who played Glenn Talbot in the first big-screen adaptation of The Hulk, recently did an interview where he talked about his film and, in his opinion, the reason that it failed. The actor revealed that he believes the key reason for this to be the fact that Ang Lee, the director of the film, was unable to match his vision with the final product of the film. Lee is an exceptionally talented filmmaker, having been responsible for many massively successful projects like Life of Pi and Brokeback Mountain.

“I think the technology evolved, and he’s one of the people who pushed the technology to evolve. I know he was pushing the team of people who were on the CGI of ‘Hulk’ to make something that, technically, maybe wasn’t capable of being at the level he wanted it yet. And so I think he was very frustrated with that movie by not being able to get what he wanted and what was in his brain.” he said.

The actor explained that, at the time, the only superhero films that had come out were ones that required actors to wear costumes to get into character for the role that they were playing. This was a lot different for the Hulk, who needed a lot more and better visual effects which were simply not available at the time, considering the film was made in 2003. Lucas explained that this was the reason that Eric Bana’s Hulk was often said to look like Shrek because of the CGI available at the time.

Josh Lucas Talks About The Director Of Hulk, Ang Lee

Despite this unfortunate experience with Hulk, Josh Lucas stated that Ang Lee is, no doubt, his favorite director of all time. This is quite the compliment coming from the actor considering the number of big-name directors he has worked with, however, Lucas explained his reasons for this.

“If people ask me who my favorite directors are, I almost invariably will tell you my number one is Ang [Lee],” He continued, “I don’t use this word genius, but I think he’s truly up there as a, if not brilliant, genius filmmaker. He was swinging for the rafters on [‘Hulk’]. I don’t think the technology was quite where his brain was.”

He stated that he does not use the word lightly when he says that Lee is a genius when it comes to his filmmaking, adding that he may as well be the reason that visual effects are where they are now, comparing the clear distinction between Life of Pi, a film that has a CGI tiger for the majority of the movie, and Hulk.
