Dota 2 is one of the most famous eSports titles in the current generation. The MOBA title developed by Valve was released more than a decade ago and still has a fantastic player base. At the time of writing, it had 650 thousand players playing concurrently. This is much larger than many recent titles launched in the MOBA genre and more popular multiplayer genres.

The game recently began its Frotsivus event. It is an in-game promotional event annually around Christmas. It sees players earning new rewards by winning matches and claiming chests, which can be opened by purchasing keys. As part of the Frostivus event, Dota 2 players also receive freebies as gifts. The entire event has various offerings for the players meant to keep things fresh for players and at the same time, sustain some festive spirit.

The Frostivus event for Dota 2 has various offerings for the players. The event’s webpage is here and can be checked out by the player. The beginning of the webpage shares a brief about what the promotional campaign will offer, stating:

Deck Your Frosty Halls With Festive Cosmetics, Gameplay Patch 7.35, Three Dota Plus Premium Sets and a Ton of QoL Client Features.

The event’s highlight is perhaps the locked Treasure Chests earned by playing the game and filling up the Frostivus Spirit meter. It is worth noting that to unlock the treasure chest, one has to purchase the keys for it with real-world currency. Filling up one’s Spirit meter also earns them a random Stocking Stuffer with items like sprays, emoticons, and stickers.

The Stocking Stuffers, unlike the Treasure Chests, are guaranteed to end up in one’s clutches as they fill their Frostivus meter, and what is better is that they don’t cost anything apart from gameplay time. The Sprays will only last until the promotional event lasts, but the stickers can be used for as long as one wants and will not expire as the event concludes.

Festive emoticons are also available in the game’s chat, with the likes of Grinch appearing. Lastly, Frosty the North Ward is another mini-sized cosmetic that will indubitably remind players of the iconic snowman from The Christmas Carol.

There are also cosmetic bundles for heroes present in the title. The heroes who have received their bundles include the following:

  • Ancient Apparition
  • Snapfire
  • Alchemist
  • Arc Warden
  • Pudge
  • Tusk
  • Primal Beast
  • Crystal Maiden
  • Wraith King
  • Courier

To make things even more interesting in the title, if one receives a cosmetic bundle or set, one can also receive an unusual version of one of the items in that set. However, as the webpage states very clearly:

the odds of actually getting your hands on it are pretty close to being hit by a meteor, so don’t clear a space for it in your Armory just yet.

Right towards the end, we also see the most exciting element, revealed as part of the promotional event. A judgment system judges players based on their activity in-game and whether they have a metaphorical rap sheet due to smurfing or other illegal activities.

The game terms it as the classic Christmas-themed Naughty or Nice categories, indicating that players will be punished or rewarded based on their behavior. Since the franchise is competitive, many players are willing to indulge in unfair means. The game uses Valve’s anti-cheat to flag such players.

Not many gamers know that the Dota franchise by Valve was initially based on a mod for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne, one of its expansions. But it became known as the Defense of the Ancients, or Dota for short. Having popularized the genre, it led to League of Legends coming out in the same genre and emerging as a competitor. While League mostly overtook Dota regarding player base and popularity, Dota is and will forever be regarded as the original.
