When it comes to eSports, many are shocked at the prize pools that usually accompany the different competitions. The main prize pool that always shocks gamers the most is Dota 2 TI, as in the past it has always had one of the biggest prize pools in recorded history.
Unfortunately, this may no longer be the case, as it has been reported that Dota 2 TI will have one of its lowest prize pools in a very long time. This can be caused by many different factors, but at the moment it is looking to be because of how the TI generates the money for the prize pools.
How Does Dota 2 TI Generate The Money For Its Major Prize Pools?
Dota 2 TI has been active since 2011, but for 2 years, Valve footed the cost of the tournament and its prize money. After 2013, the prize pool for Dota 2 TI was generated through the purchases of players through either the Compendium or the battle pass.
Over the years, as Dota 2 became more and more popular, it meant that more gamers would log into the game and spend more money on in-game items. Thanks to this, any purchase made within Dota 2 had 25% of its revenue taken and then put into the prize pool for Dota 2 TI.
Ever since 2013, Dota 2 TI has used this system to generate the funds for the Dota 2 TI prize pool, but unfortunately, in the past 2 years, this method has slowly been in decline. As players are beginning to lose interest in Dota 2 and its in-game purchases, the prize pool will inevitably decline.
For Dota 2 TI in 2021, the prize pool was over $40 million, but in 2022, this prize pool took a massive drop as it barely hit $18.9 million. With this pattern emerging and fans of Dota 2 not being happy with the current items on sale, we will most likely see another decline in the prize pool for Dota 2 TI.
Why Are Dota 2 Gamers Disappointed With The Compendium?
When it comes to fund-raising for the Dota 2 TI, Valve depends mostly on their sales within The Compendium. This has unfortunately left Valve in an unfortunate position, as this means it needs to keep fresh and interesting content within The Compendium to continue getting sales.
As of September 27th, the most recent update to The Compendium was released, leaving fans of Dota 2 with a lot of disappointment. The reason behind this is that the most recent Compendium is mainly focused on The International, and many regular cosmetics and features have been removed.
Valve is aware of this disappointment and has attempted to bring select mini-events and TI-themed rewards to Dota 2, but so far this hasn’t had much of an effect. So far, there have been a lot of players who have chosen not to invest in this new compendium, and many are wondering how this will affect The International.
Currently, Valve has no intention of changing The Compendium or bringing any of the in-game cosmetics or absent features back into the game. This has caused a lot of negative responses from gamers, and due to this, it can be assumed that this year, The International will have an even smaller prize pool.
