Dragon Ball Super anime went on a hiatus after airing the Tournament of Power. The tournament reminded the fans of Tenkaichi Budokai in Dragon Ball. The Tournament of Power had all the twelve universes bring their best group of fighters, who entered a battle royale. The last one standing would win along with the respective universe. Most fans bet on Goku and Vegeta since they were the main protagonists.

But the late great Akira Toriyama always thought outside the box. The fans were shocked to see Android 17 coming out victorious after Goku and Frieza sacrificed themselves by taking out Jiren with them. Even though it came as a surprise, Toriyama sensei had long ago predicted the winner of the tournament. It was foreshadowed at the beginning of the Tournament of Power.

Android 17 is one of the most potent Z Warriors. He was created by Dr. Gero, along with his sister, Android 18. They both have an energy core that provides them with endless energy while getting them tired. Since they were robots, they easily overpowered the Z Warriors and proved to be a formidable villain during the Android Saga. But as the story progressed, the Androids joined hands with the Z Warriors.

While Android 18 became a housewife and mother, she was slowly surpassed by most of the Z Warriors. But Android 17 on the other hand maintained his stature as a fighter. Even though he was a great fighter, fans could not believe it when he won the Tournament of Power. But they might be shocked to know late Toriyama sensei foreshadowed it when the tournament began. When the tournament began, the fighters tried to eliminate each other, with Android 17 being the first to eliminate a fighter.

While it can be a mere coincidence, his nature and abilities lay the foundation of the foreshadowing. Apart from having an energy core that supplies him with limitless energy, he does not require ki for powerups, which makes him practically invisible to other fighters. The other fighters track each other using ki, but they could not track him on the battlefield, which automatically gave him an advantage. Moreover, due to having automata features, he does have better abilities and striking prowess than most others.

The Android Saga is long gone when the Androids dominated the Saiyans and the Z Warriors. But that does not mean Android 17 has gone weak. The Android brother has increased his strength with time. During one of the episodes in Dragon Ball Super, Son Goku was seen to transform into Super Saiyan Blue while sparring with the Android. It goes to show that he rivals the strength of a God.

The only people stronger than him during the tournament were Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan. While he was thought to be weaker or on par with Android 18, he has long surpassed her and proved his worth by winning an inter-universal tournament. Akira Toriyama’s subtle foreshadowing proved that he looked after all his characters equally.

Dragon Ball Super is available on Crunchyroll.
