Dragon Ball Super has been popular with fans, but one character has been put under the rug constantly. No, it’s not Vegeta. This character has a lot of potential in them, yet Goku’s second son, Goten, has not had a single canon moment that allowed him to shine.
Goten achieved an impressive feat at the mere age of seven by transforming into a Super Saiyan. The anime introduced this character as a promising figure with more potential than Gohan himself. Yet, to this day, Goten has never been treated properly or gotten a canonical scene of himself by the manga creator Akira Toriyama.
How did Dragon Ball Super neglect Goku’s second son, Goten?
Goten was first introduced into the Dragon Ball Z series as a strong character who managed to become Super Saiyan at the ripe age of seven years old. However, he hasn’t gotten any moments to himself aside from the fight between him and Trunks during the World Martial Arts Tournament.
The franchise tried to put some light upon the character through Gotenks, the fusion of Goten and Trunks through the Fusion Dance. The resulting character carried half the personality, looks, and strength of Goten. However, he couldn’t shine on his own due to the presence of Trunks through the fusion.
Everything seemed terrible for the character. However, the Dragon Ball Super manga had a storyline with Goten as the center point for some time before the series leaned toward the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero storyline.
What were fans’ perspectives about Dragon Ball Super treating Goten poorly?
Fans were quite upset with how the Dragon Ball franchise portrayed Goten. The character’s only noticeable feat was transforming into a Super Saiyan at a young age. His power level is comparatively low, with the villains approaching Earth later being bumped up. Another prominent feat of Goten is that he fought toe-to-toe with Super Buu after fusing with Trunks as Gotenks. However, due to the presence of Trunks, it was not an individual achievement.
Man it really sucks that the only major moments Goten has in Dragon Ball are non canon 💀 pic.twitter.com/Wc4EjWKLhu

The writing team don’t care about canon
Akira doesn’t care about canon
Lets stop bringing canon into discussions.Canon literally doesn’t mean anything in entertainment. Goten got Badass moments. I’m not complaining.

Some fans were speculating that Goten was only introduced in the series as a marketing tool, Kid Goku. For fans in the dark, Goku was supposed to die against Cell, and Gohan was planned to become the series’ protagonist next. As Gohan was replacing Goku, Goten was meant to replace Gohan. Nevertheless, the decision was later altered.
