Dune features the story of a young Paul Atreides whose family is entrusted to control the planet Arrakis, the only source of the powerful material spice. The story is the journey of Atreides who becomes a chosen one and then has to fight against every challenge that is thrown the way of his people.

Kyle MacLachlan, the original Paul Atreides recently sat down on CBC’s Q hosted by by Tom Joe, where he was asked whether he has watched the new movie. In response, he revealed that he did watch the 2021 movie and had a weird fear before watching it.

I saw the first one. I saw the first one with Timothee. Yeah, and I enjoyed it. I mean I love the story so much. It is such a great journey. My fear going in  was that I was going to see the new Duneand I was going to be, “Oh! our Dune? You can throw that in the trash heap.” And I didn’t have that reaction. I said, “No, No. There’s room for both of these to exist.”

The general opinion is that the Legend of Arrakis as shown in the 2021 movie was better than the 1984 film. However, the previous movie had its own pros as well and the Denis Villenueve movie did not erase David Lynch’s movie’s existence.

In his interview with CBC’ Q, MacLachlan discussed how David Lynch selected what to adapt from Frank Herbert’s novel to fit it into live action. Further, he praised the art of both the creative beings.

“And, I think that David (Lynch) obvisoulty concentrated on the parts of the book that he responded to, that he really enjoyed. And you are asking a director, an auteur, a creative being to do a movie based on another wonderful writer, Frank Herbert, creative being. So you’ve got these two very creative energies working together.

And David responds to certain things because that’s who he is as an artist. And those are the things important to him and he is going to tell those stories in the way that he wants to tell them and visually as well.”

When asked about being replaced by Timothee Chalamet, MacLachlan had a wholesome response. He was impressed by Chalamet’s job as Atreides, knowing how difficult the role was.

“I was curious and I, you know, recognizing the challenge of the role. Not really aware of them when I was doing it but now from a different perspective and knowing how difficult it is to really create Paul (Atreides) and do Paul. And I watched Timothee do a great job”

Dune: Part Two is currently streaming in the theatres.
