When most wrestlers failed at transitioning into Hollywood, Dwayne Johnson succeeded with his iconic performance in his cinematic debut in The Mummy Returns (2001). However, despite having a well-built WWE career and an impressive resume in the entertainment sector, Johnson’s recent endeavors suggest that he might be losing the charm he once had in the industry.
Following his consistent box office failures and XFL layoffs, Dwayne Johnson now faces a massive blow as NBC takes down the actor’s sitcom Young Rock after three seasons. Evidently, the series spotlighting the early days of the actor and portraying the transition from his childhood to a professional wrestling career failed to perform well and thus faced cancelation.
Dwayne Johnson’s Young Rock Failed To Perform
Based on the real-life of Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson, his NBC sitcom Young Rock portrayed his transition from childhood to a WWE career to Hollywood stardom. Premiering in February 2021, the series starts with Johnson playing himself in 2032 where he tells his life story to actor-turned-journalist Randall Park while running for the presidential election of the US.
Playing with chronology and hovering around different periods of Dwayne Johnson‘s life, the sitcom also tackled a few darker aspects of the actor’s upbringing. However, despite giving its audience a proper balance of laughter, hardship, and a glimpse of Johnson’s life, the show failed to sustain the viewership momentum over its three installments.
Premiering the first season in February 2021, the show concluded its third season in February 2023. However, with each new season, the sitcom lost viewership, thus affecting the review of the show. Initially starting with an impressive 3 million viewers each week, the show’s third season had an average of just around 1.4 million viewers and a 0.25 rating.
NBC Canceled Young Rock After Three Seasons
Fans reported that season 3 of Young Rock felt like a show finale, and evidently, it ended up being exactly what they thought. Failing to impress the audience with his life story, Johnson faced quite a dip in linear ratings. Further, witnessing a steady drop in rating, viewership, and performance, NBC canceled Dwayne Johnson’s Young Rock after its third season.
Nonetheless, it is believed, the cancelation of Young Rock came at a turbulent time in Dwayne Johnson’s life as he struggles with his entertainment career. While his DCEU movie Black Adam underperformed at the 2022 box office and was heavily criticized, Johnson also suffered a failure with his franchise starter Red Notice in 2021. Although the actor bounced right back up with his surprise cameo in Fast X, Johnson is said to be losing his grip over his career.
In the meantime, Dwayne Johnson is busy with his 2023 holiday movie Red One, starring Chris Evans. Keeping himself busy full-time with his movie schedule, the actor wrapped production on Red One to gear up for live-action Maui in a reimagining of Moana. The actor is also reported to reprise his role as Luke Hobbs in a standalone film.
