One of the toughest moments in the life of Goku from Dragon Ball was when he was helpless in his fight against Frieza on Planet Namek. However, when all hope was lost, Goku was able to unlock a new power that not only helped him defeat Frieza but also many other villains who came after him. This unique power was called the Super Saiyan.

Super Saiyan is a power-up that is specific to the Saiyan race. However, it’s not easy to become a Super Saiyan. There are many variables that contribute to transforming a Saiyan. But there is one group of Saiyans who did not have to go through rigorous training and a harsh environment to become Saiyans. This group is the next generation of Goku and Vegeta.

Goku’s second son, Goten, and Vegeta’s son, Trunks, had no problem becoming Super Saiyan. It was too simple for them and felt like a simple ability that they could unlock at any time. However, there is a reason for that, and this reason was given by the creator of Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama himself.

The Secret to Becoming a Super Saiyan

In 2018, Toriyama gave an interview to Saikyō Jump, a monthly Shonen Jump magazine that was translated by Kazenshuu. In the interview, he was asked about how Saiyans become Super Saiyans. Toriyama revealed that the main component that is needed to become a Super Saiyan is “S-Cells,” which are specifically found in the bodies of Saiyans.

Toriyama stated:

It’s not like anyone can become a Super Saiyan through training and anger. In order to become a Super Saiyan, one’s body must contain something called “S-Cells”. Once these S-Cells reach a certain amount, a trigger such as anger will explosively increase the S-Cells and cause a change in the body; that’s Super Saiyan.

According to the manga, the S-cells are the main component, and when they reach a certain amount, it causes a change in the body that increases the power of the character whenever they feel an emotion like anger. This change is called Super Saiyan, and it’s not easy to increase these S-cells.

Goten and Trunks Can Easily Become Super Saiyan

While talking about Super Saiyans, Akira Toriyama also revealed why Goku’s son Goten and Vegeta’s son Trunk can become Super Saiyans relatively easily. While the S-Cells play a major role in their transformation, another factor that adds to their Super Saiyan powers is the environment of Earth.

Toriyama explained:

Most Saiyans have some S-Cells, although not a great quantity. The reason why Goku and Vegeta’s children can become Super Saiyan relatively easily is probably because to a certain extent they inherited a lot of S-Cells, and also because Earth’s environment is gentler and easier to live in than Planet Vegeta.

Compared to Planet Vegeta, Earth’s environment is much more easy and gentle. As Goku and Vegeta were born on Planet Vegeta, their bodies are accustomed to the environment of their home planet.

But because Trunks and Goten are born on Earth, their S-cell count is probably higher than that of Goku and Vegeta. Thus, this makes it easy for them to transform into Super Saiyan and also unlocks the better forms of Super Saiyan.
