Is Edge of Tomorrow 2 Possible With Tom Cruise’s New Deal With Warner Bros.?

Tom Cruise and Warner Bros. have inked a new agreement whereby the two will work together to develop and produce “original and franchise theatrical films”, starting in 2024 (via Screen Rant). Speaking about the collaboration, Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca, CEOs of Warner Bros., stated that bringing:

“Tom Cruise back to Warner Bros.” is one of their visions, and they “look forward to bringing more of his genius to life on screen in the years ahead.”

Cruise has a history of collaboration with Warner Bros., and this agreement represents his significant comeback to the company. Since Edge of Tomorrow was his last Warner Bros. project, Edge of Tomorrow 2 may finally get off the ground thanks to his return to the studio. As previously mentioned, the actor’s new contract with Warner allows him to produce both franchise and original films.

Since Edge of Tomorrow was their last major hit, this bodes well for Edge of Tomorrow 2. Cruise’s career has primarily been focused on growing other franchises since the 2014 Doug Liman film, primarily the Mission: Impossible series. However, his return to Warner increases the likelihood that Edge of Tomorrow will expand.

While earning over $370.5 million worldwide during its theatrical run, Edge of Tomorrow, also starring Emily Blunt, garnered favorable reviews from critics.

Starring as the enigmatic and equally fearless Sergeant Rita Vrataski, Emily Blunt has expressed her excitement several times about returning to the science fiction genre. Speaking with Variety about the project’s potential, the actress shared that she and director Doug Liman still talk about Edge of Tomorrow 2 “all the time” and that they both hope to return, as does Tom Cruise.

“Doug and I talk all the time about it. I know Tom wants to do it, hopefully, at some point. But it’s timing, but it’s also been ten years since we made it … There was an amazing script in the works, but I think it would only have worked if we shot it eight years ago. I’m not saying we’re that ancient, but you have to factor in it’s been ten years.”

The success of the first movie was largely attributed to the dynamic between Cruise and Blunt, so their reunion in the sequel is even more important for an immersive experience. Earlier this year, the actress appeared on Josh Horowitz’s popular podcast, Happy Sad Confused. The discussion covered many aspects of her career, including a notable diversion about her time filming Edge of Tomorrow.

Speaking of the demand for the film’s continuation, she exclaimed:

“I wish there could be [a sequel]. There was [a script] that Doug [Liman] kind of slithered over to me… I would love to make it a reality, but I just don’t know when, or how, or how many Mission: Impossibles does [Tom Cruise] need?”
