Marvel Studios has done one of the biggest cinematic events in history – the reunion of three Spider-Men – but actor Eric Bana does not believe it will also happen to Hulk. Over the years, there have been three famous versions of the green-skinned monster: Bana in 2003, Edward Norton in 2008, and Mark Ruffalo in 2012.
Many fans have expressed interest in the concept of reuniting three Hulks in one frame, albeit chaotic, but it would be a sight to behold. Out of all the three iterations, Ruffalo’s was the most successful, while the other two were surrounded by a lot of controversies.
Eric Bana Remains Uninterested In Returning As Hulk
During an interview with the Australian morning show Fifi, Fev & Nick for Breakfast via Comic Book, actor Eric Bana was asked if he would like to have some sort of Hulk: No Way Home movie. This would mean a reunion of his Hulk with Edward Norton’s and Mark Ruffalo’s versions. Apparently, he did not seem enthusiastic about it: “I can’t see it. I can’t see it.”
He also quipped after the hosts pointed out that his physique in the movie was indeed worthy of becoming the Hulk: “Well… CGI, man. You don’t really need [it]. Lot of steroids there.”
With the Australian actor’s latest comment, it seems unlikely now that fans are getting a No Way Home version for the Hulks. Ang Lee’s 2003 film Hulk starring Bana was considered a massive flop. The actor told the Huffington Post in 2013:
“I’m proud of what it tried to do. I apologize to all those people who were so angry about it. I’m fascinated by the people who hated that movie and feel compelled to watch it again, which always blows my mind. But, yeah, it is what it is, and I certainly don’t regret doing it.”
Interestingly, Bana did not think his career would have been better had Hulk become successful. He claimed he felt lucky that it flopped, and one of the things he feared at the time was the movie emerging as a critical and box office success – which would mean he would have to return for a few more Hulk films.
Eric Bana Felt Underwhelmed While Filming 2003’s Hulk
In an interview with Vulture, Eric Bana confessed he did not enjoy his time filming for Ang Lee’s Hulk. The actor did not like the tiny, enclosed spaces where they did most of the production, so it is not a mystery why he refuses to return to the role anytime soon.
“You go from ‘Black Hawk Down’ where you’re shooting mainly daytime, exteriors, natural light. Boom: out in the world. To suddenly, I’m playing a scientist, and I’m in a lab or a house, indoors. There’s this other movie going on with green screen that I have nothing to do with because that’s the Hulk.”
He also felt a disconnection between his two characters: Bruce Banner and the Hulk. Bana mainly worked on the scientist’s dialogues and movements; he did not perform the motion capture for the Hulk. The director took and did that job for him.
“It’s the other actors that are playing in that space. So in some ways, it felt like a tiny movie because the reality for me was every day was interior, studio, one room, very few big scenes. Lots of dialogue. I don’t like working indoors.”
At this point, many fans are absolutely disappointed to know that a reunion of three Hulks won’t likely happen in the future. When he was asked again if he ever might want to return as Hulk in the MCU, Bana reiterated, “Nah, I can’t see it.”
