Fans of Dark Souls and all things FromSoftware are very divided regarding Dark Souls 2 in this universe. This is one of the few games not directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director of Elden Ring. Some fans are not so happy with Dark Souls 2 because he doesn’t direct the game, but Miyazaki has other opinions about it.

In a recent interview, the director was asked about the upcoming DLC for Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. He talked about Dark Souls 2 and how this game helped a lot to inspire other games done by FromSoftware.

One of the most passionate things about videogames are the communities that form around every popular game. The FromSoftware titles had one of the most intense and active communities in the industry.

A part of this community had a very wrong opinion about Dark Souls 2 as the black sheep of all the titles in this universe. That is because Hidetaka Miyazaki was not involved in the project; he is the director of all the other projects in the Dark Souls franchise, including Sekiro and Elden Ring.

But in a recent interview with IGN, Miyazaki clarified his position about Dark Souls 2, praising the quality of the title and even talking about how this game inspired other titles done by FromSoftware. Elden Ring and Dark Souls 2 have many similarities in world design and mechanics, so without this game, Elden Ring would never be possible.

There’s really no way of telling how or if the series would have continued the way it did without Dark Souls 2.

The director is also very happy with the possibility of different directors in the future for From Software’s projects. So, fans could finally ditch this hatred for Dark Souls 2.

a lot of projects where I am director, so I think a supervisor role for me is just something I’m not used to and just is maybe not quite a good fit

Yet still, Dark Souls 2 is “one little area of regret” for Miyazaki, and it seems that he wishes that he continued on the project as director.

From Software has not confirmed the next title after the launch of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. The rumors talk about a completely new IP or new Dark Souls. But Bandai Namco, or FromSoftware, has not talked about this. Miyazaki has confirmed that the studio is currently working on several titles, some of which are being directed by different people.

Shadow of the Erdtree DLC will be released on June 21, costing $39.99 and requiring the Elden Ring base game to be playable. This is the most expensive DLC content ever created by From Software. This DLC has even a new and spectacular Collector’s Edition with a statue of Messmer, The Impaler.

I'm a big fan of movies and videogames in general. I really love Pokémon and Godzilla. One of my favorite games is The Last of Us, Part II. A compelling and well-written story is always welcome.
