FromSoftware thrives at creating environments that provoke a sense of mystery and vagueness. Under the layers of an unclear setting, there’s a deep history to each game’s world, and Elden Ring is no different. It’s one of the most expansive universes FromSoftware has created, and there’s a substantial philosophy that has changed through the years.
With each new game, Hidetaka Miyazaki has improved the storytelling and evolution aspects. Even though the uniqueness of an unexplored world remains the same, the way in which these stories are told has evolved. The bigger mystery remains: how will this improve or change with Shadow of the Erdtree?
How Players Feel About Upgrades in Elden Ring
With each NPC and questline, you learn about the world in ways you may not have thought of. The fight between right and wrong, the purpose behind a character’s action, the madmen roaming these lands who were once looked up to.
The brokenness and an ongoing sense of emptiness make Elden Ring feel like the aftermath of heartbreak, and players find themselves a part of this grieving process.
Sometimes these evolutions don’t survive the test of time. A complaint among players is the commitment they have to make to a weapon or build. They start with certain items because they feel strongly about them. However, with time and quests, these opinions change, and they want to switch.
Is it possible to do so? Absolutely. Thanks to the variety of weapons and respec options. But is it easy? No. You see, every weapon or build requires certain attributes and items in order to upgrade, and they’re not easy to find.
Moreover, they’re limited in number, which makes it difficult to switch to a new build type. This is the reason why many people look forward to an NG+ experience, so they can relive their glory in different ways.
Can Storytelling and Character Evolution Change?
Considering how FromSoftware games have evolved, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree can do justice to what it feels like to be an Elden Lord. A powerful being who doesn’t have to rely on limited resources. In fact, combining new movesets and weapon types may be a lot to ask, but it adds to the game’s world in many ways.
NPC questlines were mostly of quality and rich lore. However, they can certainly see and upgrade as players progress. Instead of being the Tarnished, maybe new NPCs will have a different outlook towards players. This helps us explore stories from a new angle and learn about The Lands Between in novel ways.
Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree may feel similar to the base game in many ways, but the way players view resources and storytelling can see an upgrade that sets a solid foundation for future games. Imagine being a Dex user in Elden Ring but struggling to switch to Sorcery in Shadow of the Erdtree because finding resources became an issue.
Even more troublesome would be to find yourself confused about what’s happening in the game, even though you have completed the campaign.
