After a long wait, Elden Ring fans finally got to know more about the highly anticipated Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. The DLC launches on June 21, 2024, and will take players to a new location called the Land of Shadow, where they will follow in the footsteps of Malenia’s twin brother, Miquella.
The expansion seems promising, as per the gameplay trailer, and will bring new enemies and weapons. Fans are excited to journey across the Land of Shadow, but some are also worried that the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion might repeat the mistakes made in the base game.
Elden Ring Fans Are Worried About the DLC’s Gameplay
One Elden Ring player who recently played it again after recording over 200 hours and unlocking everything in the first playthrough said that they came across a few fails and called the “over saturation” in the game the “worst.”
Reddit user Brodred took to the Elden Ring subreddit and stated that their main problem with FromSoftware is that the game has many layers. They said that the developers at FromSoftware always try to add more layers to the game, despite it already being overly layered. The player added that this can be seen in the game world when players try to unlock the Chaos ending.
They said that to unlock the Lord of Frenzied Flame ending, players first need to go to a room, another bigger room, and then inside a dungeon, another dungeon, and lastly, a legacy dungeon. The player said that many might not find this overwhelming, depending on their tastes, but they think that this many layers would not be good in the DLC gameplay.
Another Elden Ring player agreed with this, saying that they too found some areas “overcompensating” but added that the DLC is supposed to be more focused than the base game, so it is unlikely that Shadow of the Erdtree will face this problem.
Players Don’t Want ‘Over the Top’ Bosses in Shadow of the Erdtree
The player gave the example of Malenia, the hardest boss in the game, saying that she is an aggressive boss with “massive damage and low pose” but is able to dodge, fly across the area, and also has ranged attacks. They also mentioned Malenia’s other attacks and combos, basically saying that she is overpowered.
They added that they hope that the DLC doesn’t have overpowered bosses, saying, “Honestly, I’m concerned about how over the top the bosses in the DLC may be.” They said that sometimes having fewer abilities is good and having “cool moves” doesn’t make a boss better, and developers should consider this for the DLC.
The player also said that several bosses in the game, such as Sir Gideon Ofnir, Morgott, and Astel, have more moves, but the majority of the players have enjoyed the fight against Godfrey more than these bosses. Not all fans agree with the player saying that the DLC experience will not be affected by any of this, but they “understand the sentiment.”
