Players may assume that Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree’s world, bosses, and lore are what make it so daunting. Adding to this layer of challenges, who knew that certain name pronunciations would make it to that list?

Ever since launch, many have believed that one of the key components that contribute to the leveling system, Scadutree Fragments, might be pronounced a certain way. Well, there happens to be a correct way of saying this.

It’s Just “Shadow” and Not “Skadu”

Upon entering the mystifying lands of the Shadow Realm, Shadow of the Erdtree players have been introduced to a brand new mechanic that helps them level up in this world.

Unlike Elden Ring, the expansion relies on Scadutree Fragments that help players improve the attack and defense stats of their character. Moreover, this makes for a leveling system that’s unique to Shadow of the Erdtree. Next comes the question of how do we even say this name.

Did you know that this name is just pronounced “shadow”, as the Old English version of this term is “sċeaduwe”? A lot of the Elden Ring’s lore finds itself using terms and lingo that can be found in older ways of using the English language.

Similarly, Scadutree is simply pronounced “shadow” and not “skadu” as many of us would believe. This was pointed out by user airbagged on Twitter. We wonder how many more such terms and names the player may have been pronouncing wrong.

Just like the optional bosses, some players may just ignore saying this word out loud altogether. That’s one way of doing things in Elden Ring, anyway.

Scadutree Fragments Are Central to Elden Ring’s DLC

Many players entered the DLC believing that their character is powerful enough to defeat any living threat in Shadow of the Erdtree and that no one can match their wrath.

Unfortunately, FromSoftware had something different in mind and made sure that even veteran players felt like newcomers to this universe. This has been made possible by a simple mechanic called the Scadutree Fragment.

Scattered across the Shadow Realm, these fragments can be collected and used to upgrade a player’s character as they progress through the DLC. This is not a feature that players had access to in Elden Ring, and it lets the expansion be its own thing, separate from the base game.

However, the studio has also acknowledged how the game can feel quite difficult due to this and introduced a patch that may make things simple for several players.

Despite the new patch, the collection of Scadutree Fragments is still an essential part of the journey, and it’s recommended that players collect as many as they can before going against bosses such as Rellana and Messmer.
