Elden Ring is a title that has taken the entire gaming industry by storm since it was released in 2022. It was the marquee release from FromSoftware, and the title remains relevant. Best-selling fantasy fiction author George R.R. Martin worked on the game’s world-building. The game’s prosperous lore and attention to detail made it all the rage among fans of the SoulsBorne series.

Fans of the title are eagerly waiting for the expansion to drop, mainly because the studio has confirmed it to be coming, but no news of the release date has come. The game’s subreddit is filled with questions about where it will be in Elden Ring’s timeline and how much progression will be ideal, among many other burning questions.

There are also fan theories regarding the expansion, and one was shared on the subreddit recently and talks about the in-game location of the upcoming expansion.

Elden Ring has some fascinating characters.

u/Dvoraxx made the post and saw a lot of traction. It was posted two years ago but has become relevant now that the launch of Shadow of the Erdtree seems imminent. The post talks about the midpoint formed when all divine towers are considered vertices of a hexagon. Connecting every vertex with the one that is opposite to it leads to an interesting observation.

Readers are warned that the picture embedded below, made from the schematic described above, contains some major spoilers.

As seen in the picture, there is a precise midpoint or center of the hexagon formed by the six divine towers. The six towers of Elden Ring are the following:

  • Divine Tower of Limgrave – Godrick’s Great Rune
  • Divine Tower of Caelid – Radahn’s Great Rune
  • Divine Tower of Liurnia – Cursemark of Death
  • Divine Tower of East Altus – Mohg’s Great Rune and Morgott’s Great Rune
  • Divine Tower of West Altus – Rykard’s Great Rune
  • Isolated Divine Tower – Malenia’s Great Rune

Now, if one looks at the marker hovering over the approximate location marked by the point of intersection, it shows a cloudy region. A curious player tried to explore the abovementioned point of importance on a PC using CheatEngine. For those unaware, the software allows one to tinker with the game’s mechanics and teleport to locations that aren’t ordinarily reachable in the game.

The video can be found here. Upon teleporting, the marker gets the player to a specific point submerged under a lake. As the video explains, the lake water turns darker where the beacon is placed compared to the rest of the lake.

As one goes further into the deep waters, the ground map that serves as a base to hold the water in the lake is absent. This also opens doors to a lot of mysteries. On the flip side, it is possible that since the area beneath the lake is inaccessible, it wasn’t required to generate the ground map, and hence it isn’t present.

Could Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree uncover some clouded areas?

Depending on where the DLC for the title is set in its timeline, it could uncover some secrets kept by the lake and the ground beneath it. For example, if the game is set in the past where that part of the land wasn’t submerged, it may uncover the clouded areas in the game’s map.

Similarly, if it is set in the distant future, it might indicate that the lake has dried out, and the ground beneath is exposed. But all of that is very unlikely considering FromSoftware’s typical approach with DLCs. They would probably go to a location not on the map initially in DLCs, including boss fights and little to no NPC interactions.

But nothing can be said for sure, as there has to be an explanation for putting that cloud illustration on the map when it could have been left empty. Also, coinciding with the midpoint of all the divine towers is another exciting prospect.

Perhaps FromSoftware could explore this in a sequel? What do you think of this information? Do you think Elden Ring‘s DLC will occur in the abovementioned place or somewhere else? Let us know in the comment section below!
