And in the recent interview the Studio were asked whether Elden Ring had an effect on the development on Lords of the Fallen, whether it be the design of the over all game or the mechanics of the gameplay. Creative Director Cezar Virtosu responded with the following;

“I hate this answer, but it is yes and no – It’s a non-answer. What I meant is that Elden Ring caught us by surprise. We were expecting something great, not something groundbreaking. Nobody expected that sort, and it came late in our development, so we had to stick with our guns.”

He went on to say that due to their savviness that they set themselves out separately to Elden Ring but did highlight that some of the weapons they had, they also found in Elden Ring and that there was nothing they could do with that.

The upcoming game Lords of the Fallen game

Around 98% of the game has been untouched but he did say that if they saw something that was similar and they could potentially do something about it in tweaks, VFX and colour use, then that would be what has changed.

And Hexworks Saul Gascon followed up on Virtosu’s comments, stating;

“I think you nailed it. Of course, we are very aware of what surrounds us, where and when are we launching, and who’s around like the big one. We took a look, we played it, we checked, and then said, okay, we are good. We don’t overlap with them too much.”

Gascon went on to say that they had looked at the strengths of making Lords of the Fallen an open-world game and through playtests, they felt that players appreciated that it wasn’t an open world game. So in this regard it is a different experience. And he followed up by saying that bringing in these playtests, it has made the game more accessible to a wider audience and they are looking to the company for a more handcrafted experience.
