Elden Ring can be an excruciatingly painful game for those who are new to FromSoftware’s game design elements. Especially if the player isn’t acquainted with how things usually work in a game like this.

However, much of this journey can be simplified thanks to the existence of Summons. These are NPCs players can call upon for much-needed assistance, and they can be earned through exploration and quests in the game.

The Elden Ring Community Is Still Deciding Which Is the Best Summon

While the list below is an objective take on some of the best Spirit Ashes found in Elden Ring, much of it relies on your playstyle and how you choose to summon an ally in battle.

Some prefer a tanky companion who can take a lot of damage. Others prefer an Elden Ring summon that can distract enemies while the Tarnished deals most of the damage.

User Effective-Past-3156 created a post on Reddit to find out what the Elden Ring community thinks about some of the best Summons in the game, and the comments are pretty helpful.

In my review of Shadow of the Erdtree, I mentioned how the game’s challenges can vary greatly. Elden Ring (along with its DLC) is a highly versatile game that offers you many options that make challenges feel a bit easier.

Here are the five best Summons (officially called Spirit Ashes) you should be on the lookout for.

5. Black Knight Commander Andreas

Thanks to the new content added as part of the game’s DLC, this Summon can be found in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree’s Fog Rift Catacombs section. Andreas is an extremely powerful ally to have and does heavy attacks while holding massive potential for taking damage.

Andreas, a man endowed with great strength and command over the powers of the Crucible, and whose spirit in these ashes dwells.

Given how early you can find this Summon in the game, it’s certainly not a Spirit Ash you want to skip out on. Andreas’ versatility in battle often makes him a reliable NPC to have in boss fights.

4. Fingercreeper

Don’t let the creepiness of this Summon fool you into believing that it’s useless. Found in the Finger Ruins of Dheo section of the game’s DLC, this Summon is a worthy ally to have when you need someone to heal you in battle.

Devoted to its summoner, this young, diminutive Fingercreeper eagerly restores HP. They are ever so fond of their mothers at this tender age.

While the Summon does some damage to enemies, it’s mostly preferred for the subtle bursts of healing it provides. So, treat this one like a supporting character.

3. Dung Eater Puppet

The highly controversial and infamous character has his own version of Spirit Ashes that can be bought from Preceptor Seluvis in the base game.

Extremely tanky and reliable in fights against bosses, the Dung Eater Puppet is certainly worthy of your time. After all, obtaining him involves a long quest line that’s fit for someone willing to dive deeper into the game’s world.

2. Mimic Tear Ashes

Reliable, safe, and easy to obtain, Mimic Tear Ashes are easily the most user-friendly Summons found in Elden Ring right now. These can be obtained from the Night’s Sacred Grounds in the base game.

Mimic tears are the result of an attempt by the Eternal City to
forge a lord.

When summoned, it creates a duplicate of the player’s character. So, think of two of you going against enemies. Now, that certainly makes the game feel easier.

1. Black Knight Tiche

A Summon that’s speedy and deadly? Yes, please. Image Credit: Meloo’s YouTube channel.

Agile, strong, and deadly, the Black Knight Tiche is a summon in Elden Ring that will make you feel a little bad about yourself. Imagine having an ally that’s likely better than you at combat.

Tiche was one of the assassins who,
on the night of the plot,

imbued her black knife with the Rune of Death
and slew Godwyn the Golden.

This Summon is obtained by defeating the Black Knife Ringleader and is part of Ranni’s quest line. This companion’s attacks are versatile and quick and take enemies by surprise. She can even throw a knife at enemies that drain their HP over time.
