The Schitt’s Creek alum took to social media on Wednesday to apologize for dressing up as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard with a friend.

Hampshire shared pictures of her dressing as Depp, including fake tattoos and a wine bottle. Her friend dressed up as Heard. For posting these pictures, she shared an apology on Wednesday. In the statement, she wrote:

“I want to address what is one of the most thoughtless, insensitive, and ignorant things I’ve ever done. For Halloween, I stupidly thought it would be funny to dress as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. I am deeply sorry and ashamed for putting something that awful out in the universe.”

“Domestic abuse is never, ever funny. These are real issues with real people and I REALLY regret my actions. In the future I will do better. I’m so sorry.”

In the now-deleted photos, the TV actress styled her hair with a slicked-back look, added a fake beard and mustache, and donned a baggy brown suit. She had also rolled her sleeves to show her drawn tattoos.

Her friend dressed as Heard, adopting her appearance with a blouse and skirt while mimicking a crying expression in the photoshoot.

A fan managed to take screenshots of the pictures just minutes before they were removed. That fan then shared them on Reddit along with captioning: “Emily Hampshire, also known as Stevie from Schitts Creek, dressed up as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard for Halloween – then deleted the photos from Instagram.”

Over this, one person commented: “Wow. This is obviously in poor taste but, the wine bottle prop? Gross.” the second remarked: “Don’t you just hate when a person behind a character you like just… like why can’t we have anything nice.”

“What an absolutely reprehensible person. Good luck with her flop career,” agreed one person. While another slammed: “Thinking this costume is funny is sick. Thinking this costume is funny in 2023 is psycho.”
