Jo Koy’s set at the 2024 Golden Globes was embarrassing on so many different levels, not for those who were at the expense of his jokes, but for the comedian himself. From mocking one of the biggest people on the internet, Taylor Swift, to trying to convince the audience that he didn’t write the jokes that weren’t working, it is safe to say the only thing absent from this room was laughter. There were more than a few lines that the comedian crossed, however, the one that stuck out the most for spectators is what he said about Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.

The jokes made by Koy about the film that was all anyone could talk about this year, were untasteful, to say the least. So much so, that not only did it leave a bad taste in the mouths of those at home, but earned some pointed reactions from those who were present in the room as well.

Jo Koy’s Untasteful Jokes About Barbie

Jo Koy was picked by the Golden Globes this year to host and open the 2024 Awards ceremony, a decision that is being criticized by the masses on the internet. Two minutes into his opening monologue, he touched on the subject of the biggest cinematic event of 2023, Barbenheimer. He started by making some comments about the Christopher Nolan film that earned him some wary looks from the cast. Moving on from this, he then brought Barbie into the mix.

“Oppenheimer is based on a 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project, and Barbie is on a plastic doll with big b**bies,” he said. “The key moment in Barbie is when she goes from perfect beauty to bad breath, cellulite, and flat feet. Or what casting directors call character actor!”

He mentioned that Oppenheimer was based on an extremely respected and acclaimed book, American Prometheus, and Barbie was based on a plastic doll. He then touched on the ending of the Margot Robbie film, stating that she went from beauty and being perfect, to turning into a real woman, using what looked like the first examples that popped into his head of bad breath, cellulite, and flat feet. It is safe to say that people were not happy with his comments about a film that was challenging the exact mentality that he was showcasing.

The Audience Was Not Happy

The reactions that the public has had over these jokes have certainly been an extremely negative one. While this was expected as many feel that Jo Koy completely missed the point of the film he was making such jokes about, there were those in the audience who were seen physically cringing at the comedian’s set. Emma Stone, Selena Gomez, and Harrison Ford’s reactions said enough about how they felt about the comments, not to mention all that was written on the faces of the cast of the film.

Gomez was seen with her face in her hands, appalled at what Koy had just said about the record-breaking film. On the other hand, Stone was seen confused and irritated at the joke. Ford did not even bother giving a reaction, not at all amused at the untasteful jokes. No one seemed to be enjoying the odd series of jokes and the defense that came on after that.
